lansing, Michigan
It was a bad day for my eclipse on saturday. Cruisin on i96 expressway in Michigan, car jolts really hard, knocks off cruise control, starts marking a couple random scraping sounds from under the car. I make to an offramp at 40 mph, as soon as i turn the wheel, the engine dies, and the drivetrain freezes up completely. sliding into the gravel the first thing i thought was timing belt, but after the engine smoke cleared the belt was fine. Now, for my real problem. Even in neutral, the car will not roll at all. I had to have a full wrecker tow me back to lansing. The engine starts up fine and the tranny/transfer case were rebuilt 8000 miles ago (82000 on car). Dang, wtf? any advice?

thanks -anything i can disconnect to at least get a free rolling car?

Scott

sorry to be off subject, but did your car make any weird sounds leading up to that breakdown? Rear roaring sounds or anything?

hey in response to the rear sound, heck yeah i did. it sounded like the driveshaft was going to fall out the car. And especially when the car froze up, i thought i left that thing in the dirt behind me. I definately felt and hear the sound under the car before the skidding out ;) So i have decided to call the 1800 mitsu number and force those losers to rebuild my T case for free ..wish me luck

Did you determine the problem was the tcase? Could it be you broke your diff? Tranny problems are complicated, will it go into gear, you said it won't move even in neutral so that is not a good indicator for the whole tranny in general, but will it still shift into gear, easy or difficult?

good question. i had the thing towed to satan. told em that i need a couple days to decide what i want to do. they threatened to tow it off their lot. i told them to go ahead and try  , the dang wheels don't spin.....HAHA

going to check on the gearbox tomorrow, thanks for the replys, will post back

So the dealership, (as expected) pissed and moaned about recall work (lansing MI dealership).. They pissed me off, so i called the 1800 mitsu line posted here in the forums. They are saying based on my VIN number, my car has "used up" the free service bulletin "Transfer case inspection", and that it was not actually a recall on my 97 gsx, but a mere service bulletin. I am sure the previous owner had that work done in Kansas in 1999.

So, the crap work done 40,000 miles ago was only "warrantied for 12 months after the service", so both dealership and mitsu hotline say i am screwed....

keep fighting???? :p

the mitsu hotline says that " the service has already been reported to the 'government' and cannot be duplicated again" grrrr

So, with the car at mitsu dealership, starts up fine, clutch is perfect, lets me go into every gear, sitting still. As soon as i let the clutch out, the front trys to pull forward, and the rear is not moving, makes a horrible sound OMG

Dealership was going to inspect it, but they just called and said they can't move it across the parking lot for SOME REASON......foolz. they would have to tow it 40 yards in the lot, so looks like i am paying for towing time and an hour or so of diagnosis.... maybe, only if i give them the okay.

So i have heard that some convert AWD to FWD. Can i just rip out the driveshaft, tcase, back axles, and plug the holes, and call it a good daily driver still?
thanks

:p

The only way you can convert your AWD to FWD is to at least

1. weld the center differental
2. take off the t-case like you said.
3. and then remove the main drive shaft, and you can leave the back axles in and
pumpkin

What the hell kind of a horseshit shop IS this place?

with that said, poor gsx will be towed home for work next spring. If i am pullin the tranny again, let's just say i like the sound of 2.4 instead of 2.0 going back in. thanks for all ur help ya'll... :)

i never welded any diff....i simply removed the driveshaft, rear axles, and xfer case.....and i've been driving it this way for well over a year....... :dsm:

So mitsubishi says when the transfer case froze up, the shock went all the way up the transmission chewing on the splines and destroying them. So my 8000 mile old tcase and tranny with new bearings are all toast! They want 3,200 bux to drop in a 70,000 mile used tranny and tcase. What a rip off. Looks like i will just wait til the summer for the new stroker and the shep rebuild on someone elses tranny i buy. GRRRR...

Has anyone else lost a tranny because of the tcase?

The transfer case recall is THEIR baby.... dont let them screw you out of it... read my thread about what i went through to get my car done by chrysler. If your transfer case locked up, and screwed up your tranny, then they should have to fix that too.
Threatening seems to work well, especially if your t-case actually locked up your wheels and you slid. Get a lawyer to write them friendly letter or something if you have to...
