Hi i have a 90 lazer w/ turbo, just bought it used, i dont know if there is engine work or not really but anyway i know exhaust leaks hurt turbo spool and i have a slit on the manifold, and there is smoke comming from under the manidolf so i cant see what it is, the engine has been sitting for a while, ive been startign it once in a while for the past few weeks, but i dont know if thats the reason for the smoke..i hope its not rings.

well i tried to take the manifold off but it feels like all the bolts are going to snap, i dont wanna wind up gettin stick with bolts in my head broke :(.

is there a way to try and free up the bolts or something? anyhelp plz..
 
i got the bolts off, now the corner of it is stuck by like 1/4 in. its kinda hard to explain im ganna try and get a pic.
 
ok so i couldnt get the thing off, during the process i found most of the bolts were snaped some stuck in the head so it is only being held on by 4bolts, gasket looked fine

so i need to look for a new manifold, all new bolts except the 4 on top, there smoke comming from around the turbo so im guesing in eed new turbo seals :(

this sux @$$

think i should just get like an evo manifold? do the bolts come with it?
 
Depends on your budget, im doing a turbo conversion myself right now and Ill be going with a 2g exhaust manifold (less prone to cracking and a little bigger) Most vendors sell those new for about $180, no nuts no bolts. Or you could search the classifieds, just try and stay away with the prone to cracking 1g manifolds. Im getting a new one from the local ricer shop with gasket for $110. Shop the vendors section or classifieds.

Now getting those broken bolts out will be a serious pain, good luck I haven't had to deal with that. Try an easy out New bolts kit can be found HERE

Most likely the smoke around the turbo area is leaky gaskets, if it was pulling fine before it should be ok, you can check the turbo for shaft play though.

get an evo 3 manifold from sbr. or if you plan on going to a big turbo, get the sbr cast manifold from sbr.
 
i think im going to save for the evo3

what would cause smoke from the turbo? bad seals? if i have to take it out i might as well rebuil dit you think?
 
For $10 more you can have the SBR cast manifold which is alot better than the EVO3 manny, but I myself would just go with a 2g manifold and port it. I feel theres money better spent elsewhere.

About the turbo smoking, is you car smoking under boost? Out the tailpipe?
 
how much would it cost me to port a 2g?

and yea ive been waitin for the title so i cant drive it i just let it run once in a while and it smokes at idle, even after i rev it a few, i dont know if it smokes whil eim reving though.

but in that struggle to get the manifold off i ran out of time and put ti back together and starte dit, now it smokes more from the manny/turbo, i used that site and found the screw kit for $30, im ganna check at like pepboys or autozone or somethin maybe they have em, my friend has an extractor so i have to find a way to get to him and im broke LOL i have to get some money to guy this manifold LOL
 
You can find manifolds in the classifieds here and on ebay for under a hundred $$$, most are already orted to you just gotta shop around. Might wanna call around local machine shops to see how much porting is in your area, I do my own. (air die grinder and carbide bits) Most lekely your turbo is fine your just getting a lil smoke from leaky gaskets, which is no worry. You'll hopefully be replacing all those. Good way to see if the turbo's bad is to reach in on the turbo while its cold not hot. On th intake side just grad the prptruding stud and nut and try to wiggle it, its its got alot of play (shaft play) then thatsn not a good sign. What turbo is your car sportin? What are the numbers/letters on the side of the compressor housing?
 
ill show around, not to familiar with this site so im searching around, i need to get soem porting tools, is it any harder to port the 2g because its not round? i am guesing the turbo is stock, im not 100% sure i acually dont know what was done tot he car i bought used and he said the guy eh bought it form had work in it, i see free mods for intake and a read sway bar and a ####ed up manny LOL, he said he had the front end rebuilt... soo im guesing piston rings arent the problem, which gaskets do u think i should replace, the engien to manny gasket looked fine, didnt get a good look att he man. to turbo one though, but ill see wut i can do when i get these parts
 
i found a 2g manifold for $50 think i should get it? it looks alil longer than the 1g am i going to have to change anything?
 
I say replace all those gasets dont reuse a gasket. Jump on the 2g manifold if you can get one cheap WITHOUT CRACKS of course. Ive been told from some that the driver side corner of the manny, like all non 1g exhaust manifolds has to notched to fit around the engine support bracket. If you have more unanswered questions search around the site first using the search bottom on the top right instead of posting them here. :p
 
ok that 2g manifold i found out it a 1g, plus you say the 2g needs to be notched or something so im just going to get the 1g for now just so i can get the thing running properly

i bought a screw extracter bit set, a puntch and when i get time im going to take the screws out, put new ones in (still need to buy) i also percahsed a honer so when i get the new manifold ill hone it out a bit..

i test drove it 2day, def. seems slower but still fast..i dont know hwo fast its suposed to be so id otn know if tis stock, i mean the fron of the car raises pretty high when i floor it and the tires always squeech when i get to alil higher rpms. but anyway

just ganan spend like $40 on a 1g manifold, if he answers me back, get new gaskets, put the new screws in, hopefully have my title by then LOL
 
ok nvm i read up alil more on this and the 2g seems ot be alot better and can be used fora while, so im ganna go with a 2g, im ganna have to take the head off to get the screws out so i might as well get it ported and polished, have to find ahead gasket. i wish i could offord for engien internals bu ti cant :(, i might get new piston rings, maybe they will help the smokeing? i heard oversized pistons help out or something? anyway..lets see what i find
 
ok i got the 2g manifold...

now i notice the side that bolts onto the turbo has only 2 bolts, and my original has 4? how do i get that one to work? and the other side that bolts to the engine looks alittle different does it match up except the part i need to grind?
 
the 94-up are considered 2g right?

and just to be sure, all i need to change on on the 2g manifold is grind the corner down and it will bolt right up to the stock 90 lazer head and turbo?
 
ok i got the head off, cleaning it up

should i get the intake side of the head ported also? and the intake manifold as well?
