alrite. So this is my second rebuild of my head. i was dinking around after i got the head bolted back on and i realize that my oil pump sproket was kind of hard to turn. it took some effort to turn it.

Is my oil pump bad? or is it just because there is no oil in the car at the moment? or is it the cold?

Just thought id ask before I either #### something up or have to go buy a new oil pump.

Roast Beef said:How hard are we talkin? There should be SOME resistance because that sprocket also spins the balance shaft but it shouldnt be that hard.

well guys, the sprocket felt like it was.... hmm im not sure what to compare it too. i could turn it with my hand without straining. i just wasnt sure if it was supposed to spin freely. there is definite fricition. its too hard to explain with words

it felt about as tight as a bolt feels as it starts to get deep enough into the thread to use a wrench.... that might help.

Well i just talked to defiant and he claims it should spin freely. I think ill just look into instally my Balance shaft eliminator kit and see what happens. thanks anyway man

It should spin somewhat freely, but not like oh wow I can spin it and it keeps going and going. You've got to remember that there is a pretty heavy balance shaft attached to it, but it's on nice oily bearings. Did you put petroleum jelly in the inside of the pump when you rebuilt? (Haynes manual says too...vaseline..mmm...)

i havnt touched the pump since i bought the car. oil is drained but id imagine it would stay in parts of the car. ive only had it apart for almost a week. it doesnt spin freely watsoever. so from what you guys are saying i should probably tear it apart :(

Alrite !

so i printed out the intructions to do the Balance Shaft Eliminator Job. Wow it's alot of steps. The only problem is, we took off the timing belt to rebuild my head after that GD shop bent all my valves so it's kinda hard to remove a spinning sprocket. Id really like to just run the car with the oil sprocket as it is and see what happens. It doesnt spin freely but it DOES turn. I dunno, everyone's giving me different advice and its kinda hard to explain it to you guys on here. Let me know if anyone's had the problems before.
