i just bought at 90 talon tsi and i changed out the water pump/alt belt because it was chewed up, i put the new one on and for some reason it looks as if the water pump pulley sticks out a bit farther than the alternator and crank pulleys. so i put the new belt on and tightened the alternator to put tension on it and no matter how much i move the alternator, the belt moves over a tooth on the water pump pulley, so that one of the teeth on the belt is hanging off of the pulley.

does anyone have any idea why or how this pulley sticks out farther than it should? its not bent b/c it isnt wobbley. the bolts are tight.

any ideas/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The water pump pulley was probably installed backwards. Pull the water pump pulley off, flip it over, and try installing the belt again.

Check to make sure the pulley is on the correct way. I did a water pump job a while back and put the outer pulley on backwards which caused the same thing to happen, and shredded my belt.
