Ok, this really sucks. I took my 90 GSX in to the shop cuz it was runnin really friggin rough and they said that my timing is off by two teeth on the cam and the wanna charge me 925 bucks to fix it and to put stuff in the engine that i know i don't need. Now my friend said that it isn't that far off and if we could find out if it was ahead or behind we could use a timing gun to fix it. Would it be easy enough to do it that way or should i somehow in hell come up with the insane amount of money to fix it? oh yeah, and they told me to fix it they have to replace everything because of legal issues. Please please please help A.S.A.P. thanx.

Yeah I say replace all the timing components while your in there. Unless it has less than 10 or 20 thousand miles on it. You could probably find a shop that would do it for a little less but the only way to really save is to do it yourself.
You don't need a timing gun, you just need to carefully line up all the marks.

A tooth or more off isn't a matter of ignition timing, it's the mechanical relationship of the crank, balance shafts and cams. You need to at least pull off the timing belts and re-do them, and as said, if they aren't almost brand-new, you replace both belts and the water pump at the same time.

That shop's price is almost twice what it should cost, what all else are they wanting to do to it?
