Ok i recently aquired my 91 talon TSi from a friend of mine. It came to me in a condition that i thought was a blown head gasket. smoke from the tail pipe and coolant all over the back side of the motor. Me and a friend of mine removed the the head after sixe hours of labor one 2" extension and a roll of masking tape later. when we pulled the head gasket away from the block it apear to be a gauge out of it as if maybe it had been replaced before and the head had been droped on the gasket and damaged before they put it all back together. anyway the buddy of my i bought the car off of took the head gasket to a mechanic and said that although it was damaged it shouldn't have caused the smoking and coolant leak. the valves are pretty dirty and aren't sitting quite right due to carbon build up i know this cause in the dark i can see through the valve hole when i put light on the other side. could this be the reason for the smoking and if so where is the coolant posibly coming from.

this is for a few people who know common symptoms with engines and may not be 110% familier with whats in a TSi. The car is a turbo 2.0. the turbo i was told has been upgraded and a boost controler was added. friend told me he was guessing around 18lbs of boost when the smoking started. car still started and turbo was still giving boost. white smoke from the exhaust. also fuel pump and injectors upgraded as well if that makes a difference. really need some help before the cold winter sets in up here in Pa. should i just get the head done and try putting all back together? friends telling me it might be cracked head or sleeves.

Id go ahead and get the head rebuilt, and even possibly milled dowwn to make sure there is no surface damage, also, take a straight edge and ly it across the block surface in a few diff. ways to see if the block is warped.
Clean it with a razor blade from the old HG and slap on a new one and add some ARP head studs, and give it a shot.

If it still is blowing smoke...it pretty much eliminates the motor since, especially if you did the install right, the head and gasket were rebuilt.

Id say the only thing that can now blow smoke is the turbo. Check it out and make sure everything is tight.

A lot of the time peole will think that they blew a head gasket when it is just the trubo going out. Perform a leakdown test to find out for sure :thumb:
