ok i have a 1990 plymouth laser with about 112,000 miles on it. i have a collant leak that i can not find at all. i can smell coolant while i am driving but see no leak. i just put a new timing belt on it and didnt see anything wrong with the water pump please help i have a 1200 mile drive in 2 weeks thank you also how can i do a compression check??? thank you

if i have coolant thier what does that mean i have read the the water pump seep hole goes to the back of the engine to stay off of the timing belt could that be it if i find coolant their. i have no coolant in the oil that is why i think the head gasket is ok

that does not mean your hg is ok that means ur not leaking coolant in your oil. i had a mysterious coolant leak sometimes and it was comiing from my back of my engine. it never overheated bt leaked coolant. so i figured i would go with a cometic hg. so to fing out whne i took the head off the upper right corner water jacket of the hg was cracked and leaking coolant out. the crack was going towards the pistons but never made it there and the metal ring around the gasket was fine. im glad i caught that before it hit the pistons. nobody never heard of this and couldnt help me find the leak until i ripped the head off. so watch out becasue its to weird.

Get a compression tester, screws into your spark plug hole, and test each cylinder. My bet is on head gasket. My tercel had a water jacket blown and leaking into the number 2 cylinder... The guy I got it from had been driving it like that for a while.... When I changed the headgasket, number 2 piston was VERY shiny and clean... but I would tend to believe I've almost doubled power since I put the new head gasket on (mind you this is a 1.5 liter 78 horsepower BEAST *laughs* so the power loss was definately noticable)

Is there coolant on the ground? Or is it just dissapearing? If there's no puddles, I would say you need a new headgasket.

well if your compression is good like mine was get a coolant pressure test that will def tell you where the coolant is coming from and how bad the leak is.

You're supposed to replace the water pump when you do belts. I don't know if that's your leak, but it'd be the first place to check.

Like he said it doesnt matter if it didnt look like there was anything wrong with it., Its just something you replace. I mean an oil filter doesnt look bad when you do an oil change but you change it anyway right? ;)

Change it out and see what happens.
