Igloo Village,
My bro has a 92.5 1g AWD dsm. HAs had the car for just over 2 years and its been great(knock on wood) excpet for the fact its going through alternators rather quickly :thumbdown . Car has fairly low mileage .(just over 100k miles now) and had the orginal alt when we got it. It eventually went and he bought a rebuilt one. It later decided to go. So he then opted to buy a new one(i think) . All done at canadian tire (for you canadians). Its a Bosche unit . Yesterday out of the blue the car was idling funny. It showed some signs of alt probs but nothing like before. It was much less. Then the car died. He got it faltbedded to the shop and the alt is cooked.(Smells like ass) and the battery is bad now.

Why is this thing going through alts so much?(2 years and 3 alts) What can be done to fix it?

He did take off the lower exh heat sheild( Im sure there was one) so now the alt is exposed to the exh heat more then before but I wouldnt see it causing that much of a prob.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

The only thing that I can think of is maybe the power steering pump is leaking slightly? It would drip a little fluid into the alt. and fry it. Happened to mine once. But I really dont know what to tell ya man... If it is the pump then he would know b/c the alt would be all wet and nasty... Wish I could help a lil more...

I'd look into that.

Beyond that, remanufactured alternators are often know to fail easier than OEM.

I can't fully agree with the dripping on the alternator. I have been through three PS pumps and racks and dripped LOTS of fluid on the alternator (I tried to stop it). But the alternator is still working fine (knock on wood).

What about the ECU?

Hrmm, interesting.
thank you for the help. Ill get him to check it out(since hes not living close anymore)

the ecu is a stock 92.5 ecu... hopefully its still in good working order.

FWIW, I've never seen a non-OEM alternator last longer than 6 months or so on a DSM. Have absolutely no idea why this is necessarily, it's just a fact and I swear by the Mitsu units (even though I'm aware that they're remans too). And no, I don't work for the dealer.

Good luck,

Ryan

welp he said his power steering pump is leaking !!!!
He asked them if it was a prob and naturally they said no... :thumbdown .

car is having other issues but thatll be a new post soon...
bloody piss off! car runs fine for 2 years.. takes it to a new shop(new to us) and that day it starts acting up and has been ever since!

You're the exception . ;)

Well I don't disagree on the PS fluid dripping cause I've had the same problem. Some seals on the PS pump were faulty and the constant dripping of fluid on the alternator damaged it. I ruined 2 alternators that way because I missed the PS drip and didn't fix it. My thrird alternator was not reman. but rather new and worked fine. Went to the shop to fix my PS drippinfg problem and when the mechanic disassembled th pump they flushed lots of fluid into my new alternator. Guess what, 3 weeks later my alternator is failing. This problem can usaually be seen when the copper wire of the stator in the alternator starts turning black.
