Well, I found out I have to replace the capacitors on the ECu, ,so my next question is where can I get them? I seen them on E-Bay, but Im a bit pressed for time...anyone know of any store that sells them? Does it have to be a certain type of capacitor or what? Heck, if anyone is in the New Orleans area and has an extra working ecu, that'd be even better.Well, I hope someone drops me a line!

They are one 22microFarad, one 100 microFarad, and one 47microFarad. All from Mach V, they have a "kit" but go to radio shack and you can get them also.

ahaa! Heres a link

Shite! On the link from above it says you can't by the capacitors from Radio Shack :-\

Hmm...and how do I know if my motherboard is screwed or not? Eh, I guess I could try to fix it, and if it is screwed oh well, I wasted a whole 3 bucks on capacitors, ,Hahaa

If you see signs of discoloration or darkening of the copper traces or solder then the capacitors have leaked and just switching them isn't always going to fix the problem.
The electrolyte need to be cleaned off and neutralized or it will continue to eat away a the circuit traces and any open traces or damaged parts fixed.
You also need to be very careful desoldering/soldering so that you don't burn the traces off the circuit board and create a bigger repair job.

The prefered parts are 105 degree centigrade capacitors and you won't find them at radio shack.

Well here's an update:

I just completed the capacitor swap and....success! Sorta surprisedd myself, it wasn't that hard actually. Now I just have to get the tps and injector problem straight :-\

Hey, I'm doin this now, also, but the caps I got, although the ratings are the same, are really tiny. I forget the specifics on caps.

Plus, my ECU looks fine, but the car has 160,000 miles on it and everyone says its just a matter of time...

Those are the Panasonic Caps Digikey sells and work great. Yes the form factor is off but there have been a few changes in capacitor design over the past 14 years.
The prople that tell you it's just a matter of time are correct. I'd be really amazed if you didn't find some leakage under the capacitors after you remove them. Not that I haven't seen pristine ECUs, my '91 that had been garage kept since new was perfect but that's pretty rare. I just did a '90 ECU that had been in a box in somebodys closet for a few years only had the very beginning of cap leakage but it just a fact of life that electrolytic capacitors fail over time and have to be replaced if the device lives that long.

I'm not sure I follow. If you put those capacitors in and clean anything the old ones might have leaked you should be fine for another 10 years barring something shorting like an ISC.
Pulling the ECU every six months to check it is more likely to cause problems than help you stay on top of them.

Steve

Yeah, ,the capacitors I got were tiny compared to the original ones but the salesman said they made alot of changes of the years...Tommorrow when i get the time ill take some pics of the original capacitors in their broken form, they look horrible!
