Here's the problem I'm currently facing. I've got a car that needs to get recertified by the state after the engine was replaced. However, they require proof that the engine wasn't stolen. I purchased an engine from a legitimate local company who deals a lot with JDM engines puchased in containers that have been shipped from Japan. As such, he doesn't have a VIN number for the vehicle that the engine came out of and this is no surprise since virtually all of the engines he receives are just that, engines without the rest of the car to take up space in the container.

Basically, all I have to go off of is the 6 character code stamped on the block of the engine I purchased and I need the corresponding VIN number. There simply has to be some way to match a valid VIN number to this code, since they (the state) is requiring a VIN number to cross reference it with.

What I need is for some 2G guys to email or PM me their vin numbers along with their engine numbers (it's the 6 character number stamped on the block to the right of the turbo). Once I have enough numbers I hope to find some correlation between the serial portion of the VIN (or perhaps it integrates some combination of the rest of the VIN). I will of course post if I have found a useful tool for corresponding engine serial numbers and VIN numbers (probably make a VFAQ of it as well).

Thanks in advance.

The serial portion of the VIN has nothing to do with the engine serial number. They are independant (one cannot be derived from the other). That is why they want both in case one is gone to help identify the vehicle. Otherwise theives could easlily falsify any VIN registration. The state knows engines may be replaced and so then the original VIN no longer is with the original engine serial. Just tell the state that and provide proof of the new engine serial with your legitimate local company's invoice.

How do we know you are not the one trying to falsify VIN's? A legitimate post would never ask people to provide their VIN's and engine serials.

I RECOMMEND NO ONE PROVIDE THEIR VIN's OR ENGINE SERIAL NUMBERS!!!!

I guess it does sound weird that I'm asking for both the vin and serials but I honestly can't think of what someone could really do with that information illegally that wouldn't get them busted in two seconds by any run of the mill retard cop. But then again, I'm not into that whole line of work either....

Basically, I can't tell the state that I don't have a VIN number because they're going to flat out say then the engine must be stolen since you don't have a vin. Of course it's not true, but since I can't _prove_ that the engine isn't stolen then to them, it must be. Kind of like the legal system in reverse. I guess I can thank my local certification nazi's for their total BS rules. I'm so screwed on this deal because now if I can't provide them with a 100% good vin, they'll seize the car. Any suggestions?
