Hi all,

So I just got my car from the Chrysler dealer. They suggest a whole new tranny at over $2500. They admit they don't have the tools to do internal transmission work, so if they find a problem, it's automaticly written for complete replacement. They also say they can't get a remanufactured one, so it has to be new.

The problem...when I am stopped, the car doesn't want to get into 1st gear and frequently pops out when I let the clutch out. If I shift into 1st while I'm still rolling and hold the clutch in until the light turns green, no problems. Also, while downshifting into 2nd, I can feel the shifter move forward slightly like it wants to pop out. Gears 3, 4, 5 and R have no problems.

I don't know much about mechanical stuff, but I was thinking it would be a shifter adjustment, shifter linkage or synchro problems. I can't believe the whole tranny needs to go.

I went to vfaq.com and saw the shifter adjustment, but that's for a 1g. I have a 1997 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Turbo. I took the console off and it doesn't appear that there is any adjustment that can be made to the shifter. I read about changing the trans fluid to Pennzoil Synchromesh and I also read about changing the shifter bushing both under the hood and under the shifter plate. Any input on those 2 things?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. I'm in Columbus, WI...near Madison. I think what I need now is a trasnmission specialist that is familiar with DSM transmissions. Anybody know a reliable shop with reasonable rates near Columbus?

Thanks a lot.

Ouch. If you're going to spend that much money on a transmission, might as well go one that is proven and more reliable than the stocker. I suggest you check out ShepRacing. They're one of the top places that know how to rebuildDSM transmissions. He lives in OH, I believe...not too far from us.

ShepRacing.com

There are quite a few guys running Shep trannys and I'm sure they'll be the first to tell you that they're not actually "granny shifting" them either. ;) If that doesn't convince you, then Shep's race Talon would. For less than what the dealer would charge, you can get his full race rebuild that he uses on his car which has ran as quick as mid-high 8's! OMG I'm definitely going there once my tranny needs a rebuild. :thumb:

Replace the shifter cables first is the bet.

My car does this all the time also and it's been doing it for around 10k miles or so. Tranny is still perfectly fine.

my instructor was saying the other day that if your shifter moves a lot in your hand and sometimes pops out of gear it could be your motor mounts so id suggest checking those maybe? OMG

That also sounds like an excellent idea because I think one of my motor mounts are dead too.
