1st and 2nd Gear are gone...Need Help ASAP

Hey guys alright here is the low down. About a week ago my gears started acting weird, I couldnt put my car into 1st gear unless I put it into 2nd and then put it into 1st and it would go and it has been doing that for this last week. Also when backing up and hitting the break I would hear a thump sound come from what seemed to be the back end. Then I was driving last night and all the sudden I couldnt put it in 1st or 2nd gear it was like they dont exist, so I had to limp the car home in 3rd gear which was not a fun time. I got it home and started it up today and on startup both the gears worked but after about 5-10 min of driving it did it again where it seemed like 1st and 2nd didnt even exist so I got it home again. I just went outside to start it to move it over in the garage and now the car wont even start, it doesnt even try to go over it just clicks. Now I figured from what I have seen the tranny is obviously going out, but it that is what it is would it cause the car to not turn over and not start. One other thing is when all this stuff started happening the car would run like crap also, like the engine would come close to stalling and the idle was very low. Any help would be appreciated if you think its more, if its just the tranny itself then let me know. If you need any more info just ask. Thanks

I am sorry for your misfortune. I'll try to tell you what could possibly be wrong, and others with chime in (I am sure) with other possibilities.

If....3rd, 4th, and 5th, and reverse work (smoothly) it could possibly be your 1-2 shift fork.
It controls the 1st and 2nd gear rack. When you say "like they don't exist" do you mean there is no "gate" feel? Like you can just throw the shifter around where 1st and second usually are?

Another possibility is that your "selector cable" is fuxd up. I saw a "selector cable" once that was seperated and second gear had disappeared on that car. Replaced the "shifter cables" (since they come as two and not individual) and worked like a charm.

1G shifter cables interchange with 2G's so no worries, there's probably 5 1G's in your local salvage yard ( ). N/T and Turbo shifter cables = same.

If your 1-2 shift fork is bad.....that means pulling the tranny and totally disassembling it to replace the shift forks. While its totally disassembled you might as well have it totally gone through, new syncros, new seals, the works.

Yea when I say it feels like they dont exist, Its exactly that, there is no gate feel to it i can throw it in what I think is first and the shifter moves into the 3rd and 4th gear positions. Now with the shifter cables where should I look to see if something could be f'ed up there. Thanks for your help you have helped my worries a little. One thing though, is I dont understand why it doesnt start now? Anyone help me there. Thanks

shifter cables= maybe under the hood??? If not look under your console.

I dont know why it doesn't run.....maybe ran out of fuel?

same thing happened to my car except with all my gears, ut it was a little pin that came out, easy fix, so you might wanna check that out see if maybe that is the problem
