91 Laser Smoke Under Dash

ok, so my wife is driving down the road and car stalled out and smoke came out from under pass side of dash. I looked for fried wires but found none, nor were any fuses, links or relays bad!?! I did find the chassis to battery grnd wire broken. Would the broken wire short the ECU and make it litrally smoke? I am lost here!

The ecu circuit board is grounded through the ecu metal case. If say a 12vdc source were to touch this metal case the results would not be pretty.

If the capacitors in the ECU short because all the electrolyte hs leaked out they will release a lot of smoke when they burn up. Unfortunatly, if that's the case the ECU isn't usually salvagable.

Check to make sure the battery has its tie down bracket, if not thats a bad thing, get one. Also check to make sure theres not a wing nut on the positive terminal, that also causes shorting problems with the hood.

first off did the car still run after you and your wife were driving down this little country road looking off at all the trees and houses, then star gazing and stopping at the super market to pick up groceries, oh wait were we talking about a problem oh ya touching the ecu case with 12Vdc. your chances of damaging the are very slim unless you take a wire and plug it into an electrical outlet at 120V and touch it to it. that metal shield is similar to a ground plan and cancels out RF's to shock the circuits inside by touching this shield is possible but that would take a lot of juice. this shield will dissipate a static charge from your finger at about 4000 Volts very easily and best of all thats 4kVdc so first replace your ground wire. see if the car starts if not take the cover off the ecu and see if any of the traces are burned, and pray to god you just burned the coating off a few resistors if it came from the ecu. because technology from 1980's cost more than the technology of 2004. other than that it can be just about anything.
