I recently had my timing belt skip a tooth on the exhaust cam because of a bad tensioner, so I took it to a garage and had them rebuild the head and everything, with all new timing components and what not. Once he got the head back on the car, and fired it up, it was running wierd, he's saying that the TPS shows 98% open even when nobody's touching the throttle and several other things are not as they should be, also, there was a lot of carbon on the inside on the head and everything, and he's trying to say that it's from running rich and everything, which I can believe, but he's also trying to tell me that my ecu is gone. I was thinking it might be the ISC (Idle control or whatever motor thingy, can't remember the exact name.) and since they fail pretty often, that this whole head removal was enough to make it fail. somebody, help, please. He said that it wanted to die whenever he first started it up, so he adjusted the BISS screw, and got the idle right, but the diagnostics computer that he has hooked up to it is reading wierd things. Any suggestions are awesome. Thanks for your time.

Let me clear this up a bit as I realize that my first post probably wasn't too clear, now that I've had a few minutes to think this over a bit, and I'm just a bit calmer.

First issue: the Mechanic's diagnostic computer is reading wierd stuff off of my OBDII Port, basically, he's saying that my RPM reading isn't right, and that my TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is reading at 98%, but isn't actually holding the throttle open that far. He's also saying that my car is running extremely rich, and that my check engine light doesn't function. I know for a fact that my secondary O2 sensor is completely broken (the one behind or close to the Catalytic convertor) and I have no idea about the primary one.

Second issue: After the head rebuild, and new timing component install (New idler pulley, tensioner, balance shaft belt, timing belt, and another pulley, I forget which one.) The idle was set too low, and he had to adjust the BISS screw to fix it, now it's idling fine, but it's spewing out black smoke really bad, which I assume is from the carbon buildup from before the car was ever worked on.

Third issue: He thinks my fuel injectors are pushing too much fuel, which I don't think is the case, does the second O2 sensor really matter that much? I always thought that that one didn't really matter too much, so I was just going to remove the cord and sensor all together next time I had my car up in the air to do my oil change.

Head rebuild consisted of new valve stem seals, and new exhaust valves, as those were bent.

Nothing else was replaced (save timing components listed above) so it should all work as it did before the motor was messed with, right? Maybe he bumped loose a connection, or forgot to hook something back up. If someone has an idea on what he could have done, I don't care if it's a basic one or not, please tell me. I'm still a little freaked out because I haven't had my car for about a month now, and I'm starting to get a little pissed off at it, and I'm thinking of selling it once it's fixed up. The mechanic has done this exact job before, but that's only what I've heard, I don't actually know anyone that he's done this for, so he could just be blowing smoke up my ass. (not literally ;)) Basically, help is needed here, and I hope that it's something stupid liket he TPS or ISC being broken or hooked up incorrectly. Hell, maybe he even put the camshaft angle sensor (or whatever that stupid thing is called that can be put on backwards). Any and all suggestions are welcome, and thanks for all time consumed by helping me.

all this COULD be caused by a bad TPS if im not mistaken...i actually have never had one fail on me so i cant say, but if its reading 98% try unhooking it and see if weird shit is still happening

is there a way that he could have put the TPS on backwards or something?

Well, the did completely remove the head to rebuild it, so I would assume that the intake manifold/throttle body needed to be removed to get to that.

Also...since he adjusted the idle to run properly pig rich, am I gonna have to adjust it back when I make it not run so rich? I'm contemplating having the car towed back to my place to save a bit of cash in labor on installing the TPS, it can't be all that hard.

OK, talked to the guy a few minutes ago, TPS checked out OK, according to the chilton's manual test that he did on it. He's now saying that it either has some major electrical problems, or that my ecu is gone, because it's also reading some other strange values, like my intake temperature (according to the OBDII port) is at -40 degrees (IN THE SUMMER!?! W00T!) and my check engine light can't come on. Also, it's giving him some wierd codes from the ecu, that aren't in any of his books for my car. This thing is giving me such a headache. Any member here wanna give me their ECU either to borrow (if you live close to dillsburg/mount holly) or to buy cheap? It's for a 96 AWD Talon :D. Thanks!

I decided to head on over there, after I got done posting this, so I called into work late and what not, and went to check it out for myself. Everything inside the engine bay (as far as I could tell, I'm not a master mechanic) was hooked up correctly, and my battery terminals were even cleaner than I had seen them before. I looked at his diagnostic computer thingy (I forget what it's called right now...) and it was reporting some strange stuff. So, I'm letting him sort through it, and I told him to call me when he figures out whatever the hell it is that's going on. Thanks for all the help, guys.

Turns out it was the ECU, so, I got a new one, slapped it in, and it stopped running so damn rich, but now it hits fuel cut around 4000 RPM's in second and third gear. Only at WOT though. He says that it might be the Manifold Pressure Differential Sensor, but he's not sure, and that I should just work on it myself to save me some money. He said if it's something major though, he'll repair it at half cost. So....does anyone know if that sensor being broken can effect fuel cut or whatever? There's also a definitive vibration when i'm nearing 4000 RPM's, but there wasn't before I took the car in to get worked on (At least, I think so.....) Also, it's much, much louder (I think, in the exhaust at least) And the BOV doesn't make the same sound....it used to go like a high pitched bell, now it's more like a quiet exhale.

Correction: vibration starts at 3400 RPM's and lasts until I hit fuel cut, or until I shift if i'm not WOT. Also, everytime I come to a stop, my idle is a completely different value. Wonding if that might be the new ecu that I got or what, or maybe because he adjusted the idle for it when it was pig rich. The ECU came out of a 97 GSX, and yes, he had to switch around the wires for the firing order or whatever.

umm....as far as i can tell without a logger or anything, it's great. Got the codes pulled from my CEL and it had the Idle Control Sensor code on it for a malfunction. hmm.....guy said that it might be from the O2 sensor being out and since it's a fresh ECU....to give it some time after I install the new O2 and see if it works out it's own issues. I'll go with that until I know different.

LiquidOC~

For all DSMtuners that do not know, I sold this member, Gayland, the 97 ECU for his car. On the terms that he needed the ECU ASAP so his mother would not sell the car, I overnighted the ECU w/o payment. He tried paying with a credit card, but since I do not have a business account I could not accept paypal credit card payments. He received the ECU and got the car running again. I was told a check was in the mail, but it has now been 2 weeks, I cannot get ahold of this member, via e-mail, which is all I have to contact him with as of right now.

I have contacted Paypal to retreive the information off the credit card that was being used, and I still have his home address. If anybody knows him, please inform him to either check this post, or check his e-mail as I am contacting his local police on Wednesday if he does not pay me.

Other users beware he does not pay for what is given to him. Even when I went out of my way to help him in his time of need. Now my rent is due and I am short and need that money. If anybody knows his telephone number, please e-mail with that information so I can call him and try to get my money.

Thank You,
Dan
