Hi, i have a 91 eclipse gs turbo with some problems. The car has 50 thoulsand miles on it. Currently, i have the head off because im doing the head gasket. It obvously needed it, but i have another problem. When the car was running about two months ago (before the teardown), it would not hold an idle. Idle was completely non-existant. If u pushed in the clutch, or let off the gas, it would just die. The rpm's would drop to zero, stalling the car. It would run fine if u gave it gas to hold the idle, thus keeping it running. Does anyone have any ideas??

sounds like bad cylinder rings, did you ever do a compression check? Why did it need a new headgasket at 50000 miles? Must have been pretty beatn on, or over boosted to have to change the headgasket so soon. Well since you got the head off test your rings.
 
It needed a gasket because of obvious signs. The car blew white steam out the exhaust, and there was coolant in the oil. When i took the head off, all the valves, top of the head, and pistons were coated in alot of carbon. About the idle, how would rings affect that? i was thinking it would be some kind of electrical idle control...

I soppose it could be the throttle postion sensor? I just thought bad rings because I was thinking about my friends caviler and he had the same problem, along with your changing the head gasket at 50k. It could have been the bad headgasket causing the idel problems too?

I guess its kinda a vague question with alot of possiablilites. I guess the best thing is going to be, put it back togather and see what happens and go from there.
