My baby was broken into

I've had my '95 Talon at the shop for a paint job for 3 weeks and come to find out it was broken into about a week ago. I was in Okinawa for Army Reserves AT so I figured 3 weeks would be enough time to get her painted. Anyway, here's a list of things the shop has to replace: Boost gauge, A/F ratio gauge, gauge pod, Hurst shift knob, stereo, center column is busted, HVAC/Radio trim, a copy of Office 2000 Developer ($700+ ), keys, alarm system, and some other incidentals. Seeing my baby all tore up made me feel sick :barf:

My problems are:

Do I make the shop change the ignition and door locks (And my house lock as well because my house key was on that ring)? The thief took the keys and remote but the shop and police say they were probably pitched into a ditch which I highly doubt.

What kind of extra security measures can I take, within reason, to prevent someone from breaking in again or stealing the whole car? I'm going to do a little ignition cut off switch someplace in the car but is there anything to keep people from unlocking the door with a slimjim or something?

Thank you very much!
Rob

Well getting the ignition and door locks changed is needed just to be sure, and a new alarm. How far is the shop from your house or where you usually drive? I doubt they would go looking for your car and break into it again, but you never no. Also you might as well change your house locks, because I'd care more about that then the car, and how much would a set of locks cost anyway? $10?

There really isn't anything you can do about the door getting slimjimmed - if it happens, it happens. Now if your door opens when the alarm is armed, the alarm will go off, and that might scare away some theives. But remember, if they really want to get in, they will.

You could install a fuel pump cut off switch, that would be a better idea, because they will most likely have no clue why the car started, then sputtered and died, and won't start anymore. So while they are out there trying to start your car, you have already called the cops!

fuel pump cut off switch???
where do u get dat at sounds like a good idea
how much is it? :thumb:

I've heard a few people talk about fuel pump cut off switches but haven't found any concrete directions on how to do it...But thinking about it (and looking at the vfaq rewire directions), if I re-wire my fuel pump I would put a switch between "The part of the blue wire coming from the harness (original +12V supply wire) which will now be used to charge the relay (connected to terminal 86)." Is that correct? The area in quotes is from the 5th page of the 2G rewire guide. How long can that wire with switch be? By running it all the way up to the center console or dash area would that affect the rewire or damage anything? Thanks guys!

Yea that's exactly how it's done. No it won't hurt it - the pump isn't getting power from that anyway, it's just a turn-on wire for the relay, so as long as it has any 12V+ signal then you're good. I'm not sure where you would tap it without rewiring the fuel pump, I would be afraid of all the extra resistance or w/e (its late and I can't think of the correct term, I'm pretty sure it's resistance though) from having too long of a wire if you tapped it at the pump itself.

Cool. So if she ever gets out of the shop I'll be doing the clutch kill switch and fuel pump kill switch mod. How exciting! :)

That's why I'm going to try to get the ignition and door locks changed. Whoever broke in has to know where I live from registration and various items with my address on them. If I were him I'd wait until the car got a nice new paint job, new stereo etc. and steal the whole darn car.
