1g 2nd gear synchro's

I recently bought a 91 laser turbo and I have been having problems with the 2nd gear. When I first bought the car I would have to shift from 1st to 2nd between 1000/1500 rpm's or just skip 2nd and go to 3rd from 1st or it would grind. It really suck's. :mad: But as I drove it more it started getting better. Now I can get into 2nd from 1st in any rpm, but it will still grind occassionally. But I still cannot downshift from 3rd to 2nd, it will grind every time. I have a friend that is a head mechanic at a local shop and he told me the synchro's might be stuck and to get synthetic gear lube with additives and it should break them free enough to get it to shift right. Other mechanics that I've talked to have told me that the synchro's are going bad and I need to replace them. They also told me that the 1g m/t had a problem with the 2nd gear sychro's. I was just wondering if any of you have had this problem and how did you fix it. If you replacedthe synchro's how much did it cost. :confused:
 
Stuck synchros, eh?

yeh.

You might try changing out your transmission lube to Pennzoil Synchromesh as a first resort.

And, it's a keen time to learn how to truly double-clutch your downshifts, because after all these years of it not being done, your gearbox now needs it.
 
I guess I should have phrased my post better. I didn't mean the synchro's were getting stuck what I meant was maybe they were rusted and not working properly. And I really don't know how to double clutch. Maybe someone can teach me how.
 
yea defiant tell us how to double clutch. i tried to LOL, to shift mine to second cuz i figured what the hell it shouldnt grind then for sure. so im going maybe 10mph clutch in neutral, clutch out. clutch in rev it up a bit, second, clutch out and it grinded all the same? LOL i know im a stupid noob and ive only driven a stick like 70 miles total now but i got the hang of it LOL.
 
with synchros you really shouldnt have to double clutch.

The whole purpose of synchros was to make it so you didnt have to d. clutch.

The best thing to do, and ask prez, is buy Royal Purple Synchromax in the tranny. I use it, and my tranny is perfect. www.slowboyracing.com sells it. This should help it out a lot.
