Hi DSMer's,
Hoping someone can help me out with my baby. I have a few problems I can't seem to figure out. I've searched the VFAQ so please don't tell me to do a search. First Problem, Car seems to have a rough idle. The tach sits steady at around 750 RPM and doesn't jump around or anything but the car seems to spit and sputter. I'so while driving at a steady speed, The car will cut out or Stutter for a minute or so. It doesn't matter what gear I'm in it seems to happen whenever I'm at a steady speed for a few minutes. Happens about once a day. I would assume it is the same thing its doing at idle. I've changed the plugs, coil and Plug wires. I'm running stock NGK plugs.

The engine light is on and I took it to the shop but they told me the ECU isn't throwing any codes. How is this? They told me the ECU may be cutting in and out due to a bad ground maybe. So when I got the car back I installed a ground wire kit. Shop also told me the intake temps were Crazy high. I found The Coolant line to the Intake was Busted so I figured that solved that. Car hasn't ran any better. I only have 1 or 2 mounting bolts in the ECU is that a problem? Does that ground it out?

Problem two: I have my MBC Turned all the way down. @ WOT Boost jumps to 17-18 PSI for a second then drops down to 15 and sits there for the rest of the gear. Why can't I turn the Boost down anymore? Also I'm hitting Fuel cut @ 15-16 psi. Do I need a SAFC to fix that? Also the car doesn't seem to have much power under boost. It sounds bad ass and the boost shoots right up but I can't really feel it like I should. Clutch is not slipping either.

Since I'm already at it, How about some advice on some mods. So far I only have 255 holley pump, 3" intake pipe w/K&N minus Airbox, 3" turbo back exhuast w/o cat, Greddy Type s BOV. I have a few parts stocked up to install but I don't have an EGT gauge, SAFC or Data logger. I want to install 1 or 2 parts a week in case I run into a problem I'll know where its at. I need to know what order to install them so not to run my car 2 lean or rich. I know the answer will be get a SAFC or Datalogger. Which is better? Anyway the parts I have I need to install are: FMIC, Holley Fuel Rail, Pacesetter tubular header (should I just get a 2G manny?). I Know I'm going to need 550 injectors and a FPR but I'm not sure what I can install before getting these. I haven't upgraded the Intercooler piping yet b/c I want to get the Front mount on. I'm planning on a 16G turbo upgrade, should I wait to install the FMIC with the Turbo? Also I'm going to port out the 02 when I start work on the Turbo/exhuast manny. I don't have Boost creep yet with the 3" exhuast surprisingly, When I get the 16g on, should I go ahead and get the 34 mm Wastegate flapper?

Sorry about all the questions but I've been looking through these threads forever and can't seem to get any answers to these questions. They have been very helpful for other probs tho.
Thanks for any help or suggestions,
Rick

-Pacesetter make a header for the turbo car? SAFC is for making adjustments, logging device is to monitor the result of your adjustments, so you will need both.

-You can pull the error code yourselve with either a 12v lamp, a 12v buzzer or a multimeter, instruction @ vfaq.com.

Yes pacesetter makes a Turbo header. Actually its for the 2nd gen. How much is a datalogger? How can I pull the codes myself, The shop claimed it wasn't showing any codes.

I would pull your ECU out and check for leaking capacitors.

Hear any clicking noises coming from the dash area when this stuff is happening?

http://www.tmo.com/howto/ecu1g/caps.htm

If the ECU is cutting in and out its not likely its a bad ground (though I suppose it could happen) more likely the capacitors are leaking. What is actually happening in that case is the fuel pump is being shut on/off/on/off/on/off etc.

This is not a huge deal to fix and its very cheap. If you dont know how to replace the caps take it too an electronics repair shop (tvs, vcrs, etc) they can do it no problem and it wont be expensive at all. You can do a search on ebay and find the replacement capacitor kits for a few bucks including shipping.

Of course its possible the ECU is damaged beyond repair but I doubt it in your case. If so than you can find a replacement ECU fairly cheap. You wont know until you pull it and open it up.

I don't see how any of those links help me at all.

-You ask about datalogging right? those links show you how to make a logging cable and the free software, all you need is a PDA.

I don't hear any noises but I'll pull it and check the caps anyway. I just replaced it about a year ago and haven't driven it much since then. I'll let you know what I find.

Still haven't pulled the ECU b/c its my only ride until Friday. I found another problem with the car now. Once in a while the idle will drop to 500 for a minute then it will get a surge and jump up to 8-900. Also when it does this and I put it in first and take off nice and slow, there is no power then I'll get a surge of power and take off. This is really pissing me off and I need someone that can help me.
