ok so here's the deal. i finally got my 96 gsx up and running today ( replaced engine with one from japan but swapped everything over from old engine (pumps, manifolds, turbo, water pipe etc).

today was my first time running it and i must say i fell in love!

i did however encounter a problem - i was in 5th doing 100-110 and it felt like i hit a governer or something (sudden loss of power) and i gradually slow down into the gas station because i had to get gas. i pull out and rev it up to about 4k and notice that there is no turbo power. i quickly turn back into the same gas station and notice that my car has left a huge cloud of white smoke.

i drove it home shifting at 2k (above 2500 white smoke comes out the back) and must say i am very sad and very pissed. it has taken me months to get this car running (time constraints ) and then i go and blow up the turbo (i think)

as it sits now, the stock boost gauge goes up to about 3/8 when it should be in spooling range but there is NO power coming from the turbo whatsoever and again... the white smoke.

i know little about turbo's so any help would be much appreciated.

is this a turbo issue or a wastegate issue? or something else i'm missing altogether?

if this is a turbo issue what are my options for replacement? i would love to hook up a custom 3 inch all the way exhaust to a bigger turbo if i could, but i don't have much cash to spend so my options are somewhat limited - however i do appreciate ANY suggestions in this dept.

thank you guys so much in advance!

Hey when you put your new engine in what kind of headgasket did you put in?(if you put a new one in at all) and if it was your turbo a cheap upgrade is getting a 14b turbo of a 90-94 car, and intall kit , just look in the classifieds on here or dsmtrader :thumb:

i put a headgasket on that i got from shucks (local auto parts) because the one of the new engine was bad

what sort of difference are there in the turbo's off the 2g and the 1g (including power :D) ? and does this "install kit" have everything i would need to make it work?

links anyone?

Yea, white smoke usually means burning water/coolant. Did you torque down the head to the proper specs with a good headgasket? Also, try running a compression test on your cylinders to see if there are any compression leaks in your block due to bad headgasket or what-have-you. A loss of compression would cause all the boost created by your turbo to leak past the piston rings, or through a gap in the gasket. Get a DIY compression testor for like $30 at meijers/walmart and you'll know. Its also handy to just have around to make sure everything is working every oil change or so.

also, what do i need to make the "big 16g" turbo's work on a stock eclipse? i've seen a lot of these around but i am a newb to the whole dsm thing.

if you have links to answer my questions that is completely fine... i just need answers :D

If it ends up being a turbo problem, the power gains from stock 2g (t-25) to a stock 1g (14b) are night and day. The 14b is a very proven turbo with times in the 12s I believe...maybe lower, someone can chime in and help here. In order to put one on a 2g, basic parts are the stock j-pipe from a 1g, 1g oil lines, and new gaskets etc. The official 'install kit' is a bit overpriced (~200) but it will have everything you need.

would it be harmful to be a 14b on an otherwise stock 2g?

also any sort of ballpark hp number gains for that swap?

nope i dont think it will do any harm to put it on, the 14b flows a lot more than the t25 you have now and if you have the tools to do a home porting job i would recommed that too. im not sure about the hp gains you will get because i have never done a 14b swap on a 2g but ill bet youll feel a big difference :thumb:

oh, and also... anyone know where a good write up on putting that 14b on a 2g? one with parts needed would be great!! :D

and also what is the difference between a big 16g and a small 16g? pics please!

i happen to have what i have been told is a big 16g (got it off jdm engine with yellow top injectors) so i'm wondering what EXACTLY it will take to get that turbo running on my stock gsx?

please reply with pictures if you can, and i have a pic in the turbo thread here

thanks fellas, i REALLY appreciate your help :D

The difference between a big 16g and a small 16g is the compressor wheel. The compressor wheel on a big 16g flows better at higher boost level. If memory serves me right, the small 16g flows 505cfm and the big 16g flows 550cfm. Check that install write-up of the 16g on a 2g and the install is EXACTLY the same with the same parts.
