I have a 1992 Eclipse GSX that I have owned since November of 1991. The car has been sitting for four years while I determined that the car needed a new transfer case. Transfer case has been replaced. The car has been operational for one week with only a hose leak. Yesterday I upgraded the gauges to a reverse indiglow set and tapped into a unused wire above the fog lamp switch. Works great. Today while driving with air conditioner on I notice the stereo does not work then antilock brake light comes on and power windows roll very slowly then air conditioner starts operating very slowly car starts to sputter then dies. I wait a few minutes car starts everything operational then after a few minutes stereo goes out antilock brake light comes on and car dies. Wait one hour everything repeats. The car will only run a few minutes at a time then die. The car has a brand new battery. I am guessing that one of three things are wrong. My wire job – Alternator – ECU. I have no knowledge about the ECU where it is located etc. The alternator has a great deal of oil on it from a leaky seal. I did notice a post that said a positive wire that was grounding might cause problems. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check if the battery is getting a charge. Symptoms are pointing to alternator. Get a voltmeter, and measure the battery voltage while the car is running (if you can) and while its not running.

Voltage is 12 volts when car is not running. Dropped to 10 volts in less than 1 minute when car is running. Alternator?

Thanks,

Your alternator is not charging the battery. When the car is running, and the alternator is charging, the battery voltage will be around 13.8-14.0.
