Need help with ignition and base timing on a 97+dsm with a 6bolt swap

Ok, I think my timing is the cause of all my problems. I have a timing light. I hooked it up and thought i timed it right. but i have a feeling its not. I dont know what wire to ground out. I have both the 1g and 2g haynes books and they aren't helping me at all. THe thing is I cant go past 3k without the car wanted to stop on its own. its either knock or maybe some fuel cut. but as the turbo wants to spool it slows down dromaticly. I did do as much research as possible but cant find anything. Someone please help me
 
The only way that I have found (1998 with 6 bolt) is to hook up your light and if you have a logger hook it up and then make the 2 match using your CAS. usual timing at idle 900RPM's is around 7 or 8 and my motor actually jumps around a little ... but mostly stays around that number. Only on a 1G can can you ground that plug (2G has no plug to ground)to get your timing to stay perfectly still (I think that I read somewhere that you can un-plug the ISC to get your timing to stand still, but I might be wrong). But first you always want to make sure everything timing belt and cam gear wise is perfect.
 
like the guy above said...i would really invest in a datalogger, it will help you a load when trying to get the car tuned and to make sure your timing is ok. Do you have an afc? what size are your injectors? if you think your getting knock around 3k rpms i would richen it up just a little and see what happens.

also did you do the POT. fix for the random missfire?
 
my coil packs were bad and i'm replacing the ecu (once the ecu comes in) i ordered the obd2 pocketlogger and a palm. I didnt want to go with the eprom ecu and the dsmlink cuz i plan on doing the afc later. I have stock fuel setup but its not sparking like i should so my timing would move and i had black smoke from the rich mixture it was so bad my plugs were black to the top of the threads adn gas fumes were comming out the cylinder walls. so i'll post back once i get my ecu in thanks
