is my egt probe f'ed up?

This started this morning. When i went back into my car after letting it warm up i noticed that my egt gauge was going nuts. it was rapidly moving back and forth between 800 and 1000degrees F. When i started moving it would go up to 1200 and be fine but when i jumped on the highway and started cruising at around 55-60 mph at 3k rpms the egt gauge would go nuts again and for no time did the car run or sound any different then its allways ran. I got out and popped the hood to see if i can find anything loose but couldnt. everything seemed to be intact and the car was running fine. Could my egt probe just be going bad? Ive only had it for a month and a half its a autometer phantom egt gauge and probe. What do you guys thing?
 
your talking about the power wire that the probe connects to? theres a wire coming from the probe going to two wires and you have to screw them together are you talking about those?
 
No . You should have 6 wires coming from the gauge. 2 to the probe. 2 for the light. Then you have the 2 i am talking about which is the power 12v wire and the black ground wire.
 
Well i tried the ground wires and i found one that was a little loose so i fixed that connection up. It started working fine for a day but then it started again. But now it reads redicoulusly lose egt's ill try the rest today. Could it be that my probe is bad? Are the autometer ones know to crap out after a month or so of regular driving'?
 
i had same problem..it was the ground wire
 
i checked the wires again later tonight, there may have been one that i missed. The wire is tapped into my radio ground wire which i ensure was getting a constant ground. Auto meter said they would warranty the probe too. I havent checked the wires coming from the probe to the cockpit it could have gotten kinked there maybe aswell

if you are drilled a screw into the body that has paint , shave/remove the paint so that it helps ensure a good ground.
 
ok so i checked all the wires and i cant find any loose connection everything looks to be fine and the needle still shakes. can it be the probe? I spoke to autometer and they are gonna send me a new probe. hopefully thats the problem
