is this motor done or what?

well, i was riding with this girl in her sentra tonight and all of the sudden the motor starts knocking like whoa. i told her to turn off the car and pull over. i pulled out the dipstick and it was like kinda dry with some odd looking oil bits on it. i cleaned it, put it back in, pulled it out and there was almost no oil on it. we threw in 3 quarts of oil before it showed up on the dip stick in the "good" area. we started it, idled it and now when the motor revvs above 2600 rpms it knocks like a son of a bi***. apparently she has been driving around with her oil light on for some time now. i think the motor is done, but how bad would you all say the damage is? what do you think will be involved in fixing it?

yes i will bet the bearings are toast. The cylinder walls are gone and more. Just buy a new motor.

yeah, sounded kinda like detonation... the odd bits of oil was like crusty burnt oil.

well, i know its not a dsm, but i was just trying to get an idea of how bad things are going to be. it might be covered under warranty, and if not then she is going to probably get a sr20det cause shes always wanted a turbo and i bet her mom will give her the money to do it to.... i bet the warranty wont cover it though cause she put on a cold air intake, and an exhaust. they will probably also say it was neglect that caused it, which is very true. oh well, sucks to be her, unless she is getting a sr20det........

I meant it towards the other guy who asked if it was detonation. There would be no other knock other than noise knock.

yeah, seeing as how it had no oil in it, im willing to bet she spun a bearing. its amazing how stupid people can be..... i will know exactly what happened and if it is covered under her warranty in a little while.

You have been taken by the dealership. Not many people know this but the dealer has to prove to you and a the warranty company that those modifications casued the problem. I dont see how a CIA intake would cause the motor to tun out of oil. I think she is screwed either way, but they are just using that as an excuse to toss a motor in it.

Or she could have checked the oil while she was under the hood. I wish parents would buy there kids some common sense instead of cars and clothes. We would all be better off if they did.

update....

this is what i heard from a good source, but not directly from the horse's mouth... they said that the oil plug was leaking and thats why there was no oil. her mom fought a bit and now she is getting a new motor in about a week and a half, and i believe it is all under warranty...

oh, i gave her a thorough scolding.... went something like this. "you do know that the lights on the dash mean something is really wrong and needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY right? the oil light doesnt mean "hey, maybe you should change your oil... no no, it means "PUT SOME ####ING OIL IN ME RIGHT NOW OR IM GOING TO SPIN BEARINGS AND FIRE CYLINDERS THROUGH THE HEAD!!!!"" "oh. i am stupid." "yes, but now you know better."

Two things:

1. Make sure she knows that the oil light doesn't get brighter the more important an oil change becomes, nor is there some sort of buzzer to tell the driver an oil change is really, really important .

2. Pull out the dipstick, wipe the oil off as usual, and slap her with it .

Seriously, I hope it works out for her. No matter what, I don't wish the kind of engine hassles she is in store for on anyone.
