O.K. I'm new here and don't want to break the rules...so I read a lot of stuff about "sputtering", and can't find one like mine.
'91 Laser 2.0L, N/T, 78k actual miles, completely stock. My wife ordered it new. Looks new even under the hood. Until this the only thing we've done besides change the oil every 3k miles and change the plugs a couple of times is change the timing belts. For the last year been trying to figure out a intermittent sudden hesitation, like a sputter. It happens suddenly both when under power going down the road or decelerating, not at idle. Occassionally shuts power down enough to turn on the check engine light. Actually died only once. Feels like maybe a lack of fuel or spark for a split second, then returns to power. It seems to only occur after it has been on the road a few miles, never when cold. More often if engine is at full temp and the A/C is on.
The code (using a volt meter) looks like ignition coil. I replaced the coil but no, so had the old coil checked, it is O.K. so put it back. Replaced the oxygen sensor, idle motor, spark plugs (checked the wires). I ordered a power transistor, but at this point am afraid that isn't going to do it either. Where should I be looking?
