Car dies every time come to stop

every time i come to a stop at a light or a sign the car makes funny noises the dies. if i keep my foot on the gas it wont to it but it will jerk around at steady speeds. i really do like the car but its been nothing but a pain iin the ass. if anyone can help me figure out theis problem, it would be greatly appreciated. all i can think it could be is the fuel filter.... thats all i got.....

Does it make a sort of scraping noise coming from the side of the engine with the timing belt? Because mine did the same thing, stalling when i'd push in the clutch, and it turned out it was the water pump.
