I just bought a 96 tsi fwd. One of the things ive noticed is that as soon as I start the car, most of the time I get this loud noise from my timing or alternator belt. I really dont know which one but the noise goes away as soon as I put it in first gear and drive off. I was told that the timing belt may be a loose and that I would need a tensioner to tighten it up. Does anyone know where I can get one from or what the problem may really be? Thanks

a high pitched squealing sound? probly just the alt belt. the timing belt cant squeal... it has teeth on it.

not a high pitched squealing sound? then describe the sound!
yea, the sound description would help

Timing belts don't get loose, they just die. Usually from shearing teeth off with the crank sprocket at low speeds, sometimes from interference of something else breaking.

You're liable to need a new harmonic balancer.

Wow, my car does the same thing. Mostly when it hasn't run in a while. I just replaced harmonic balancer, I have no a/c belt, and my alternator belt is tight. Does kinda sound like my timing belt. Sh*t.

Sorry about that. Its def. not the timing belt. It was the alternator belt. I went to autozone and got a new alt. belt and power steering belt tonight and threw them on. I noticed that I had a broken bolt near the alternator (it broke in half inside the engine) that i guess helped the alternator keep still. But as far as the sound, it only does it for a few seconds now and its not really all that loud. So either I didnt tighted the belt enough or the broken bolt is what making the noise.
