ok, I have a 92 talon tsi awd; and, it's an automatic (so more wires than needed are involved in this problem). For the past two weeks, i've had the entire engine wiring harness exposed: pulling melted wires apart, splicing, and a lot of taping off bare wire. This next part in parenthesis is just a more detailed bit of info. that I'm not sure if it will help in answering my questions or not, so,read it at ur own risk if u can understand the babble :
[(ok,there was a 30amp fuze in a for my fog lights instead of the called for 15amp. It must've tried to blow, couldn't, and caused the power wire from that fuze to melt down to the copper, leaving that green residue everywhere. I traced that wire along the engine wiring harness to the driver's side fog light, and then found the black ground (black wire with a single red square every inch), i'm assuming, was crossed with that very wire. The part of the harness where these two specific wires are crossed is about 5 inches worth leading to the light. Now, i've been trying to trace the ground wire to see if it's burnt or connected anywhere else, and its a single wire running from the passenger side fog light, along the harness, and then a wire comes up from the drivers side fog (the wire that was crossed with the power). The wire from the driver's fog was completely burnt, the one from the pass. side was not. They both went into a fusible link. That wire coming out of the fusible link was burnt up and frayed to breaking point. It had gone into another fusible link with about three other wires. All these wires were no larger than 16 gauge, most of them 18. but the mega wire coming out was about an 8 or 10 gauge, and it had a single copper thread inside it that was broke, not burnt. In all, i've seperated all melted wires, took out the fog light relay and dead fuze, and i wasn't sure if the unburnt wire coming from the pass. fog light was the source ground or not so a spliced that wire and took away the fusible link, so that that wire has no connection to the driver side burnt fog light ground. Now, it's just a straight wire from the pass. side fog light to the 3 wire fusible link. One of the wires in that link runs directly from that link into another taped grouping of unburnt wires, so I'm assuming all of these dark grey/black wires with the one to two blocks every inch are all connected grounds)]
OVERALL: Certain fuses in my junction box, under the dash , keep blowing. They won't blow if I turn the key on; but they'll blow as soon as i turn the car on and put the entire load on the wire. I'm better at mechanical than electrical, but through trial and error, i'm gettin it. i just wanted to know if i might still have a short in the ground wiring somewhere; because if it was a power wire short, the fuses would blow as soon as i allow any power load on the wires right? Also, my key reminder won't stop making noise; and i had to take the fuze for my horn out because it wouldn't stop beeping. All of these multipurpose fuses that i'm having trouble with ( 1,10, 19, ) have their source as the battery. I'm guessing i just need to find the rest of a falty ground.
The part of the engine wiring harness this happened to started at the box in front of the battery and followed to the fire wall. I took the front fender off and the burnt wires don't go past the fire wall. The car is still driveable, with the only difference being those blown fuzes. #19 fuze is for my radio, dome lights, foot lights, MPI control unit... I have circuit diagrams but there's only so far I can trace them till I'd rather just rip the wires apart and trace there sources hands on.
Can anyone shed some light/answers on this whole mess?? I love this car for what it is (and the performance tunes i've done to it); but, it's also a daily driver for now. So, i'm determined to fix this problem.
