Where do you tap your egt probe? Downpipe or Manifold

Just wanted to post a poll b/c it seems to be such a hot topic these days. I have mine in my manifold however i'm planning on putting it on my new downpipe to eliminate the manifold or i might just keep it the way it is. I'd perfer if everyone who posts a repsonse to also vote on the poll. :thumb:
 
In the manifold will give a much better reading IMO because the exhaust air doesnt have the turbo's heat "added" to it. You do run the risk of it breaking but hey thats a risk you gotta take I guess.
 
DSMJim had some good words in another thread about it. Just search for his posts and youll find it. After reading everything I still put it in the mani again.
 
Agreed. After reading what DSMJim had to say about mounting the EGT gauge probe. When I ordered my AGP kit, I tapped it into the O2 housing. Don't want to take the chance on trashing a brand new turbo. Besides that, like Jim said, it is a monitoring device, if you know what the temp is when the car is happy and runnin good, that's all you are using it for, when it goes out of that range, something is wrong and it will be noticeable no matter where it the probe is at.
 
If you have it in the downpipe you will get constant surges of heat at high rpms. It will run very hot. Such as driving on the interstate. When it is in the manifold it is taking a surge of heat everytime that cylinder fires...now when its in the downpipe it obviously takes all four cylinders heat...i dont know if i believe the whole temperature dropping theory. I mean yea it makes sense but then again it makes sense it would be just as hot if not hotter because it is taking the heat of 3 more cylinders. Anyway i read DSMjim's information and i would go with sticking it in the downpipe. It's better safe then sorry, definatly when it comes to that turbo!
 
I just installed my autometer egt gauge and put in the downpipe as per the instructions with the gauge. I was just wondering what temps others are seeing if they have it installed this way. I usually have been getting up to about 900-1000 while cruising and about 1100-1150 under a good pull. Just wondering if this sounds about normal for this location.:talon:
 
I keep it in the manifold at the number 1 cylinder since it'd be the hardest working cylinder. I've never heard of an egt probe breaking off. I also have it about 2 inches from the head. I use my wideband for tuning but my egt as well because if my wideband sensor dies, I want some sort of backup device and I'd also like to know what it's doing when the sensor is good so I'll know what the temps should look like if it goes bad.

Didn't read what the Jim guy said but I just know that there's a delay in the amount of time you're gonna get the reading so I don't rely on it totally. But I'd prefer to have it as close to the cylinder as possible since it's gonna be hotter there since it IS the combustion chamber. And when temps can get so hot that it can melt internals, I'd rather have a higher reading than get a lower reading in the downpipe and also have temps of other cylinders....not the hardest working cylinder.
 
I second what "V8s are slow" said. I bought my EGT to worry about my combustion temp and whether of not I am melting my head, as well as my rotating assembly. I guess the EGT in the downpipe is an expensive, yet easy to tell warning that your exhaust is clogged.
