Runs like crap

I have a 1990 lazer 2.0 turbo. When I got it I had to replace the head. Because the timing belt had broke. Anyways I have it all together and it runs weird every once in a while it will run great like new. More often it will smoke like crazy[smells like its running rich] and only go to about 2000 rpms and dies off . The check engine light was on and it was the knock sensor so I replaced it and no diffrence. anyone know what could be wrong. Please help

Sounds like one of the 3 sensors that are in your throttle body. You should try replacing the throttle body (borrow one friend or something), and see if it fixes the problem, then you know what you need to hunt down.
