a/c belt is ........

Well today i was on my way to work and i hit some water and i heard a squeel and my power steering stoped working...so i knew it was my serpintene belt.. well i took it down the road to get it fixed and went to pick it up after work.....they put the belt back on and everythign was fine... well i got about half way home and i heard a squeel and i smelled burning rubber... i poped my hood and the a/c belt is all burnt to hell and wasnt spinning.. i droped it off a little bit ago and i wont know the vertict till tomm.. anyone have any idea what could cause this? and how much $$ im looking to spend? ty jeff

you could have the clutch on your AC compressor locking up.

Sounds like a seized AC compressor, which the shop should have found during their road test.

Anyway it does sound like a seized compressor, how often do you use your A/C? If its not much then just leave the belt off till you have enough money for another compressor (or maybe fix that one). So how much you spend depends on if you need your A/C or not. I'd start looking around on the trader for somebody who ripped their A/C system out (people in cold climates do it quite often to save weight so you should find one for not too expensive, but the shop will probably get you a pricey new OEM one).

Well i took it to a new guy and he knows his shiii stuff and he said everything looks fine...beside the belt........ i bought a new a/c belt was like 17 $ so if that fix's it great.... if my compressor is bad wouldnt that also effect my heat and defrost also? if it doesnt ill just take it out anyways... i dont use my air its a convertable...ill post when i find out if the belt fix's it or not.... ty

The compressor is only for A/C. About the defroster, they say it helps if you have the A/C on (it defrosts faster supposedly) but it will still work fine, just like if you had the defroster on but the A/C off. And the heater is completely unaffected. I see you have a 98, that would suck to have no A/C in such a new car! Hopefully the belt will fix it, I hope it does cause any car made in the 90s should have A/C!

COOL BEANS! well im happy it was just the belt.... and a few other bolts... the 1st place i had it took out soem bolts and stuff which caused this to happen.. AND THE CHARGED ME FOR IT! well the guy put a few new bolts back and the new a/c belt and everything is running good!
