I installed a new valve cover today along with plugs and wires. The install went fine and I got everything put back together. I was driving home and as I got into my neightborhood I started hearing a squelling (like from a belt) and my car stalled and died. I got the car into my garage and tried again. The sound seems to be coming from the cam gear belt (on a 4g63). We left off the cover on the cam gears because it looked a little different. Is there some problem with this? I need this car working by tommorow to get to school! Please help! Please post with suggestions! Thank you!!!

"We left off the cover on the cam gears because it looked a little different."

Ok, sorry. Let me elaborate. We left off the cam gear cover because the cam gears looked cool. (thats what I meant by different). I took it in the garage and reinstalled the cam cover, and started it up thinking this might be related. The same noise occured. I have been reading the chitons and have centered the noise down to the Upper Timing belt. The belt appears to be rubbing on something because it is starting to glaze on one side of the belt. However, we didn't mess with anything relative to the cam gears or timing belt. I hope this clears things up. Did something break (a tensioner, etc) and it just happened to occur after my first attmpt at being a mechanic? Thanks again.

Oh yeah, the car is a 1991 Plymouth Laser RS Non-Turbo 5-Spd. It has 80,081 miles on it.

When you said it died the first thing I thought was it's probably your alternator belt. your timing belt isnt goint to squel it has teeth and grooves if it slipped you would know it cause your valves and pistons would do a little dance only the valves would be beating the shit out of the pistons LOL so thats probably not your problem. If its glassing on one side of the Timing belt what side is it. I still say it's your alternator belt try tighting it up and then see whats up if that dosent fix it change it.

If you are looking at the engine from the front of the car, the timing belt is starting to glaze on the left hand side of it. I am going to go check the alternator belt, but I dont suspect it to be the culprit.

I just thought I would update the situation for future people searching the forums for similar problems. It turns out the problem was totally unrealted to my installs that day. I spun the bearing on the alternator pulley, which was causing the screaching. My timing belt was perfectly fine, and not rubing on anything. Too bad it took 3 hours worth of labor to figure this out. Oh well, 264.00 later, my car runs perfect. Hope this helps someone in the future!

Guess what... Its not even close to fixed. I picked it up the next morning, drove it a block and turned around. The metal screeching is gone, but now it is just the belt on something sound. Sounded like a goddamed supercharger was on the engine. I turned around and droped it back off; only after I took the "mechanic" for a ride around the block to show him wtf was wrong. Anyway, Today is the 3rd day without my DSM, and I miss it, and they have charged me another 150.00 with no end in sight. I'm pissed, and am thinking about going in there towning my car to my house and tearing it apart.

Quote on quote "All the accesories have been taken off the engine and it still makes the noise. We don't know what to do about it other than stare at the engine."

And this was a good shop that has service my car for over 11 years.

Sorry, rant mode off. If you have any suggestions, I would greatly apprecaite it. On the better side of things, this is like my 4th reply to my own message - in a row. YAY! :thumb:

Did you drop any bolts into the timing cover when you had the top part off? Could have also been a rock or some other foreign object that made its way into the timing cover. Mitsu put the upper timing belt cover on for a reason and I would suggest never driving around without it. I would pull the lower cover off and see if something is in there. Might take a little time but that is cheaper than pulling the head and replacing all the valves because of a rock or bolt ended up breaking a timing belt.

My guess, I think either the tensioner or the idler pulley has some bad bearings and is causing this but then again, 92awddsm might have pegged it. Try pulling that lower cover off. (Hint) Its easier to take the cover off if you take the lower fender well cover all the way off aswell. :dsm:
