I just got a 1991 Eagle Talon Turbo TSi with 89,000 original miles. I have one noticeable problem that is killing me.

Car has brand new 10.2 mm wires and NGK plugs gapped correctly and just installed, and at idle the car surges not bad but not smooth. What is wrong? Biss screw......? or O-Ring? How hard is it to fix and how much is it does it cost?

If anyone is a local Cleveland, Ohio tuner/mechanic of the car I will pay you to fix it. Car is beautiful and I want it running A-1 100%.

Sometimes when I start it and put it in reverse it just cuts off, but starts right up. What is wrong. I need expert help. Thanks sincerely.:talon:

Sounds like a bad case of idle surge. Sometimes its just a leak in the intake/intercooler system. Happy hunting.

I see some exhaust smoke coming from somewhere under the hood. Someone told me I need some kind of gasket replaced. Then some say it is the Biss screw or O-ring. Ohh boy. Old cars. Cool, but I got to get this fixed. The exhaust smell is coming through the ventilation system and its killing me literally.

Do you know how much it cost to fix the leak in the intake or intercooler system?

if there are exhaust fumes coming from the HVAC i am not sure.

But as for the price for fixing a leak somewhere, you dont want to pay someone to do that, you want to just find it by listneing and feeling for it and then tighting down or replacing gaskets. If you go to www.vfaq.com there is a things on how to replace the biss idle screw and o ring. Also have you tried screwing the idle screw all the way in and then turning it out 2 full turns. and you should idle around 750-800. Also sometimes the throttle plate stick open a little due to carbon build up, whcih means u take off the uicp and open the throttle and clean it.

Thanks Eric,

I am not a mechanic and I need some help figuring this all out. Sometimes the expereinced guys don't want to answer these questions, but when you don't know you don't know. So.............thanks for leading me in the right direction to fix this great car.:thumb:

I was also told that the reasons for surging in a 1991 All-Wheel Drive turbo are:

1) possible cold air valve sticking in the throttle body

2) bad IAC

Does anyone know how much these repairs cost to fix? Let me know a.s.a.p.:talon:

Sounds like a regular case of idle surge ;). Read the WHOLE thing (its kind of long but there is a lot of different things to try. BTW I hope you know that when you own a DSM you become a mechanic ;)! Don't give up and let somebody else fix it, try it for yourself!

Also check out this page if the page above doesn't help (im sure it will though):

JJay,..

Do you think that the problem might've occured because of the wires or plugs,..Was the car idleing fine before the wire change...If you are getting idle problems, and more curiously, exhaust fume smells, I wonder if when the plug wires are in the correct firing order and put on the correct position on the cap,..Maybe the sparkplug wires are in the wrong firing order and causing the bad idle and exhaust smells,..Check with the manual and check that sparkplug wire #1 goes to right connection on the cap, check #2 wire etc,...

If you think that the plug and wires arent the problem,..join the club on idle surge,..

Ive been tracing my idle surge problem for a month now,.For you, if you are a beginner at this, do read the VFAQ as mentioned in the other post so you know what "causes" to look for. You can try and start the car and place an ear and your hand over the throttle body and look/listen for leaks around the TB on both sides for gasket/loose bolts leaks (either side of uicp and intake manifold), the TPS and throttle spring side and around the vacuum hoses. This would be an easy start to begin with and a water bottle sprayed on these areas could help detect leaks too (like checking a deflating tire emersed in water).

After that, go down the list and check them off one at a time and hopefully you'll solve your problem,..

Good luck
Kevin

the exhaust fumes in the car wont be a case of idle surge though. You might want to go to an auto shop or auto store and ask one of the guys there to see what they think.

Better to get a new or used ex. manifold. The 1G will crack again, plus it has smaller runners on it. You can find a used 2g exhaust manifold and port it out, but this can crack again later. Better yet, get an Evo exhaust manifold from Slowboy.com as they are on sale now w/free shipping for $200. Great deal.

The Evo manifold is better cause it has a higher content of nickel in it which makes it less of a chance that it will crack at all.
