I've got a problem. I put a new head on the car, new timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, etc, everything was lined up. We did a compression check and it turned out good and tried to start the car, all it did was crank. Then it stopped cranking, like the starter wasn't engaging with the flywheel teeth. I took it off and tested it, the starter gear wasn't doing it's thing so I replaced it. We haven't tried the new starter yet, but I noticed that the belt looked like it was sliding off the teeth of the bottom of the cam gears, look down and the crankshaft sprocket is off the woodruff key. We forgot to put in the sprocket bolt before we tried to start it. The timing marks for the cam were lined up when I noticed it being off the end of the crank snout, the oil pump marks and the crank were in place. However, since the crankshaft sprocket was on the snout, but not on the woodruff key, the crank was able to turn when we were cranking it.
so my question is, are all the valves closed when the cam timing marks are lined up?
