i am haveing problems with my engine stauling. it has only done this 3 times sence i have owned it. i have only had it for about a year. it runs like a dream any other time but except for when it stauls. ill just be driving and when i go to stop i feel the car just stop running. i try to start it and all it does is turn over. i wait for 5 min and then it starts and runs like it should. im not sure what could be making the engine staul. some one told me that it could be that the cat is clogged. it never did this in the winter. today was the 1st warm day this year and it did it to me agian. if anyone knows what could causing this to happen please let me know. thanks

no the engine does not over heat. it stays at the normal temp all the time. it has never over heated sense i have owned it.

Sounds like fuel filter might be clogging up. Could be cat also I suppose. I believe both would cause hesitation/bogging during acceleration as well as stalling. My '90 would stall out when coming to a stop, but would start right up again. My problem is with the ISC.

I remember hearing about something similar to this. It turned out to be a switch up under the dash. I think somebody called it a reed switch. Anyways, there is a sensor that is connected to either your speedo or tach. The ECU uses it tell if the car is moving. When the switch goes bad the car will die while pulling up to stop lights or while letting up the gas fast.

Hope this helps.

well that is a new one on me. i have never heard of that before. do you know where the switch is located under the dash? i hope that is what is wrong. it has only died 3 times in the last year that i have it. so its not like its all the time. if it was it would get to the point to where i would be really pissed!!!!

I had a similar problem in a different car. It was a 1990 Chevy Cavalier...which was my first set of wheels, and a very different beast, I know...but I would have the same issue. It would idle very rough sometimes, hesitate and stall quite a bit at lights and stop signs. It did turn out to be the fuel filter. Ran like a top for another 10,000 miles after I replaced it.

But, if the car just up and shuts off, it sounds like it has to be an electrical/sensor/computer problem, since with a fuel issue, it would run poorly more often, instead of just stalling out of the blue. Does it sputter before the motor quits? Or does it just shut off as if you turned the key off?

my car does not bog when i accelerate and there is no hesitation. it runs fine just like it should. it just dies when i come to a stop. each time it has done it they all have been about 4 months apart.
