I am leaking oil and was wandering how tight do i need to get that center area on the oil filter housing that the filter screws into i think mine might be loose, and i can find any torque specs for it. also would a leak in that area run over to the timing belt area? Thanks for your help.

yeah i know i have been reading on the filter housings i plan on swaping in a 90 housing and an external cooler sometime.

The torque spec is 29-33ft pounds. I would check the big o-ring inside that seals this. It is inexpensive and I have seen them blow and dump a lot of oil.

As long as he usues BLUE threadlocker it should be fine.

posted by crotchkiller No threadlock or sealer is needed if you know how to install your oil filter PROPERLY.

On DSM's the POS Aluminum Waffle Water to Oil Cooler crushes - "spitting" the Oil Filter Gasket - Run the Stock Mitsu Oil Filter with T shaped gasket - OR - get an Oil Filter Relo Kit adapter that keeps you from repeatedly disturbing the POS "Waffle" - Best bet IMO is go with Air to Oil Cooler - You do see guys with other self-locking ideas for the Oil Filter but it's kinda hard to Torque-up a Waffle Mr. crotchkiller.

could i get a oil filter relocation kit then just put a cooler in the return line of the relocation kit? Then just cap the coolent lines off to the stock cooler.

I would think so yes - but you may have enuff ports to give the filter & cooler each it's very own "loop" - JDMAWD has an awesome setup KINDA like that but left the Water Cooler functional & put the Filter in his Bumper vent where it works kinda like a Cooler (check his Gallery)- Still a little risky IMO but the Water Cooler seems to do better about not crushing & leaking internally if it's not messed with much.

Still - If I were doing what you propose I'd get rid of the unused Water Cooler & mod the Oil Filter Stud as I did & not worry about spitting an Oil Filter ADAPTER Gasket from a crushed W/Cooler!

yeah i was thinkin of just doing what JDMAWD did and they sell these heatsinks that can clamp around your oil filter and that would help a little more on cooling. Or would that be a waste of money to buy the heat sink.

no im talking about relocating the oil filter into the drivers side bumper like JDMAWD did and possibly put a heat sink on it there where it is constantly getting air.

O, sorry. Well, that would pay off some, the question is whether it'd just put a cooler layer of oil against the wall of the filter and slow down heat transfer rather than helping it.....

yeah i decided not to put the little heat sink crap on there cause if it was good i would see more people using it. Im pretty set on just doing a oil filter relocation kit and putting an oil cooler in the return line from the filter, then just cap off the coolent lines.

Once & for all - Let's beat this sumbitch to DEATH - Please think about canning the Water Cooler & just going with the Shorter Oil Filter Bolt - Then mounting your adapter directly to the OFH - That way you pick up more clearance from the heat of the Turbo & Downpipe area AND delete an extra gasket/potential failure point AND it's also just kinda tacky have an orphaned Water Cooler just sitting there...

BUT - There are several styles of OFH's out there - One of them is dead simple = Oil in Filter = Oil out Filter to Motor - no ports, etc... YOU DON"T WANT A LOW OIL TEMP VALVE IN THAT CIRCUIT! (the Oil Pressure Relief Valve would lift & dump into Oil Pan (I think) until the Motor locked up)- I personally would definitely WANT a Low Oil Temp Cooler Cutoff Valve in Colorado - In the Circuit you propose check your OFH to be sure that Oil would GET TO THE ENGINE SOMEHOW while your Oil is Cold because SOME of these Adapters have Low Oil Temp valves in them (IMO that Adapter was meant for Oil Coolers more than Oil Filters) so beware of that - others have the Valve seperately - Ideally your Oil Filter would NOT be isolated by the Low Oil Temp Cooler Cutoff Valve that was meant only for the Oil Cooler circuit.

THE 90 OFH HAS Low Oil Temp Valved Ports for the Cooler & with the Oil Filter Relo Kit you could have a SEPERATE circuit off the Adapter for the Oil Filter.

OR - if you don't have a 90 OFH you could use an Adapter WITH an Aftermarket Low Oil Temp Valve for the Oil Cooler Circuit & your unvalved OFH Ports for your Oil Filter Relo KIT (if your stock OFH has the ports like my 91 OFH) Your Oil will flow to motor via the unvalved Ports just like mine does...
