so i just invested in 1500 worth of antique lawn ornament haha. thats what this cars gonna be if i spun a bearing

alright so ive been hearing a *ticking* from my engine. I figured it was something in the valve train. but i just came inside from doing a Compression test....test results were 140 160 140 160

alright let me get you guys up to date first.

i finished swapping a motor into my 90 talon about 2 weeks ago, been driving it around beautifully. Only problem was an idle problem, swapped out a new throttle body and it was fixed. So about 5 nights ago i let my friend drive the car. Hes a gd driver and all so a truck pulled up next to us. one of those hemi's so we messed around with each other did a few pulls and than , we stopped at a light and stalled....we didnt think anything of it and drove it home. We let it idle and it was fine, but when we revved it up it would tick rapidly and very loudly. not exactly a knock, i winding kind of. i figured it was jus a broken rocker arm/ bent valve because it was coming from the head....or so i thought.

Ok so i just finished my comp test and that rules out valve train. i took it for a spin around my block and everything seemed fine, but i could still here the ticking. i noticed that the oil pressure was at 1/4 on the gauge. than i remember reading that when you spin a bearing oil pressure gets low. *SIGH* i crawled under the car and had a friend revv the motor, im pretty sure the noise is coming from the bottom now.

questions:

1. how much would it cost to send my block to a machine shop and get the bearings and crank fixed.
2. could it be something else

SORRY FOR THE LENGTH

did you notice a considerable loss in power?? when i spun a bearing in my old 7bolt it lost so much power when it happend it wasnt even funny. And it appeard the noise was coming from my head too but i pulled the engine apart and found i had a spun bearing.

Im not sure how much you will have to pay a shop to check it out...but i would guess it could get expensive(i did a 6bolt swap). that is if your crank would be salvageable.

well, before you get too depressed i'll tell ya that the bearings have no impact on the compression numbers....also the numbers you listed are'nt really all that bad, i've seen alot worse that ran pretty well.....if you want to check the bearings just jack up the car (using jack stands) and pull the oil pan and then drop the bearing caps one at a time and put them back on after pulling each one and checking it (no worrying about mixing them up this way) just make sure you use a torque wrench during re-install and torque to the book's specs. a spun bearing will be pretty obvious, and if there is a spun bearing alot of times the crank will live through it ok and you can install new bearings and get away with it since our cranks are pretty hard. new bearings really are'nt that expensive and you don't have to remove the engine or head to replace them, so it's not that major of a job, but the tick might just be a stinkin' lifter gone bad or a belt or pully or something less major....let us know what your going to do and if you want anymore guidance along the way i'm always here for ya bro':dsm:

OMG pictures would help OMG

I disagree. Our cranks are steel instead of cast iron so they are harder and more brittle. I had 3 differant cranks that had spun bearings and all 3 showed cracks when magnafluxed.

yes they are steel which is HARDER than cast iron, especially with the HARD COATING that the factory places on them........they are much much stronger than most other cranks, BUT they are not indestructable nor is any other crank, and i don't think that i said that in my post....what i said was the likelihood of failure is much less than with the average cheap arse crank :dsm:

vtlaxplaya16.....one of the best things you can do first off is get a shop manual for your car if you don't already have one, that and if you can try to find a fellow dsm'er in the area to lend you a hand with the teardown, as for pics of the bearing caps under the oil pan did you try going to www.vfaq.com? not sure but i think you might find what your looking for there....there really is'nt much to see under the pan though, it will be pretty self explanitory if your good with mechanical things......but like i said it's definaltely the best money you can spend right now to get a shop manual for your car, i think most autozone and advance auto stores have them for under $20......let me know if you have any other questions or problems, and if you want to you can post some pics up of the bearings or other internals when you get them out and we can advise you of their condition and possible failure reasons or whatever.......good luck though, if i was there i'd deff. give you a hand with it and most other dsm'ers are prob the same way....:dsm:
