I was removing my head to change out the head gasket and when i was taking off the timing belt, for some dumb ass reason, i did not align the timing marks or the dowels in the 12 o'clock position. I was at the bottom of the engine on the ground turning over the engine and aligned the sprocket, but nothing else. I marked the belt and when i took off the head, holy crap, it was not at top dead center it was at bottom dead center. So now i'm ####ed and don't know what to do, my buddy pulled the timing belt all the way off too.

How do i set the initial timing on the cams so i don't bend valves. I have rotated the engine so that #1 is TDC. I would guess that i would just align the timing marks and put the dowels in the 12 o'clock position.

What about the other things to align? how do i do those?

I have read the virtual FAQ, it is more for someone who had marked everything and had all the marks already aligned when the belt was taken off, but i kind of messed that up.

Hope someone can help me out.

you should be able to line everything up still. When I rebuilt my head the last time I had nothing marked. If you have the 1st piston at TDC then all you need to do is line up the other marks accordingly. I don't have my manual, otherwise i would give you the information that i used. There are marks on everything that you need to align and the oil pump one is easy to set also. I believe I used a Haynes maual to get this information.

good luck

the head is still off right? if so, just rotate the cams so they are correct.
then rotate your oil pump pulley so it is right (check vfaq for this). then your front balance shaft. that's all you have to do. it will be fine.

What he said.

Also, if you run the pistons down half-way you can put the head back on, bolt it down and use the block to hold the head while you rotate the cams. Doing it off the car can be done but you'll fight spring pressures and your leverage will work against you.

Either way you'll be fine so long as you move the pistons down prior to the install, line up the cams, rotate the crank back around and you'll be good.

thanks for the info, tomorrow morning when i get off work, i will take some pictures of the timing marks i have everywhere and post them so u guys can let me know if this shit looks good before i bend some valves.

1) - WTF are you talking about? - Are you telling us you pulled the Timing Belt & spun the Crank before pulling the Head or what?

2) - Why the #### didn't you call me?

3) - & yeah IF YOU DID #1 then you aren't LIKE a dumbass - you ARE a dumbass...

What's your number asshole and i'll call u today, i deleted the emails with your number on it. I wasn't gonna give u a ring until i start the installation on it. I don't have the parts yet, still waiting on them from darksideracing, they seem to be slow as hell getting me my parts i ordered nearly a month ago. I just wanted to know how to fix the problem i already did. I probably will start putting it back on the same day i get the parts or the next day, which should be some time next week, hopefully. Basically what i meant was, i turned the motor over at the crank and aligned the oil pump sprocket with it's timing mark, I thought that the crankshaft sprocket was on the right mark, cuz someone put some whiteout mark on it and it was at the tdc mark where the cover was. so i marked the belt and took it off, then when i popped off the head, the piston was at bottom of the cylinder so i knew i was wrong, then i checked the marks and found the timing mark was on correctly on the oil sprocket, but not on the crank, so basically every thing is off and i needed to know how to set everything individually correct and reset the cams to the correct position.

email me your number and i'll give you a ring today. I am going to take the intake manifold and the valve cover to the hobby shop and do some sand blasting.

one more of the cam gears.

BUCK, give me a call if u want to stop by today this morning or afternoon, when i get the parts in.

I feel alot of love in the air.

You may want to remove your cell phone number and PM it instead. This is not a secure site and you may be opening yourself up to a bunch of crank calls.

I think Buck can handle the technical aspect from here just PM me if you need any additional help and I'll jump back in to the thread.
Good luck,
Doug

I know one thing - that is one Nasty - Oily - Sumbitch! The Timing Belt is soaked - The whole Front Case is Oiled - DEFINITELY ALL new Oil Seals across ALL the Front Case penetrations & new Camshafts Seals - new Valve Cover & Spark Plug gaskets - & Don't be surprised if you find a crack in the Valve cover you are Blasting... look HARD.

- From one ASSHOLE ;) to another... IF I understand this correctly YOU DIDN'T SPIN THE CRANK WITH THE TIMING BELT OFF - IF SO - You are cool - Sounds like your goal was just to get it positioned at a point where it was ready for re-installation BEFORE you pulled it - You failed miserably & were surprised when you pulled the Head.

My phone numbers, email, everything are on my Website Link at the bottom of every post - I don't hide my contact Info - It's all over the Internet anyway in my business...
