2nd gear

95 Tsi Awd with 1G engine in it.

my problem is when driving my second gear grinds like a mofo wether it be from first gear or downshifting from 3rd. if i pull it into 2nd with some force sometimes it doesn't grind but i'm getting kinda tired of that and i can tell my 2nd gear is getting a little worn.

now, i did some reaserch and i think that maybe it could be my syncro for that gear. is this comon? has anybody else ever had this problem?
how hard is it to replace?
please let me know, even if it's a simple answer. all help is really apreciated.

Yes its common way too common if u ask me and yes it IS tough tranny must be pulled and torn down but maybe if u adjusted your slave/pedal rod might help try that and see how it treats ya.

i'll try adjusting that sometime and see how it goes... but in the meantime, does anyone know where you can get the 2nd gear syncro?

still grindin' away in 2nd gear! damn i'm pissed. it usually also pops out of gear a lot now too. i'll be tearing out my tranny pretty soon so if anybody wants pics of anything in there i can try to get them. i think i may do it on the week of monday 15 march .this is gonna suck!

also, does anyone know where i can get a new/good used 2nd gear w/ syncros and anything else needed to do this.

You gotta take apart the whole tranny to replace the synchro ring. It's a complicated process for the average DSM'er, and not worth the trouble unless you're going to do a full rebuild. 2nd gear is the achilles heel for DSM trannies. Replace it with OEM parts and it will just break again.

I've been through the 2nd gear grinding before. Get a Shepherd rebuild with a double synchro 2nd and never worry about it again. His prices are very reasonable, and now I can shift smooth, fast, and as high as I want.

does anyone know where i can get a double syncro 2nd gear kit so i can install it myself. i'm going to do everything myself but i dont know where to get upgraded syncros. i emailed TRE and they haven't got back to me yet. any places? maybe prices too?
