Hey all quick question. I was driving down the highway in my 95 eagle talon non-turbo and then all of a sudden my check engine light came on. I pull off and stop the car and check the oil and the rest of the fluids because I smelled something like oil burning. There was nothing wrong with any of the fluids. I started the car back up and the check engine light didnt come on. The next day I am driving again and the light comes on once again. Does anybody have a clue as to what might be wrong with the engine. What would cause the engine to smell like oil is burning? It only has 60900 miles on it if that makes a difference

As for the CEL, I wish I knew. The oil on the other hand... Mine does the same thing. It smells like burning oil, but I have no oil spots on the ground, nor do I see any decrease in the oil level on the dipstick or when changing the oil. As it is a DSM, it's probably just nature of the beast.

You get a CEL when a sensor gives the ECU a reading that's out of a given range. Have the codes pulled so you have some idea what to check.

The oil smell was _probably_ a drip on the exhaust. But good on you for having the sense to STOP AND CHECK instead of driving the 200 more miles to college or mom's or wherever it is

just checkin but did any of your electronics cut off? cuz i had the same problem the other day. My check engine light came on then i turned it off and got back in and it turned off, then turned back on, and it was dumb i had a hood short but i was to dumb to even notice. Just a suggestion.

Nope none of my electronics cut off. I think defiant's idea might be right because after I turned the car off today and walked into the store for about 30 minutes, I came back to it and no check engine light came on. Of course i am still going to have to take it to a delaership to get whatever it is that is causing it replaced.
