Hey guys, this may be a dumb question, but my old man is a dentist and he has one of those tanks that are about 5 feet tall full of N20 so i was thinken i could fill up nitrous bottles with that, does the kind used in cars have anything else in it of is it just strait N20? I know how to fill up smaller bottles from the bigger ones i do it all the time with nitrogen. Let me know if anyone has an idea. (If you didnt know Nitrous oxide is the same thing as laughing gas)

I was always told that automotive nitrous and laughing gas is not the same at all. I know laughing gas is nitrous but it's not the same as automotive nitrous. I can't remember the differences off hand but maybe someone else on this board *cough Noslaser cough* ;) knows the differences.

The main difference I can think of is that dentistry nitrous is always a gas while automotive nitrous turns into a liquid before it hits.

Actually, they are the same. The main difference in the two is that automotive Nitrous Oxide has 100ppm of sulfur mixed in to stop people from inhaling/ abusing it. Your dad has to have a license to distrubute medical grade nitrous (controlled substance,) he will lose his license if it is found out that he distributes it in a manner other than for medical purposes. Also, if you give it to someone who abuses (inhales) it and is injured or killed your dad can be fined or jailed.

Turbo Guru is correct; they are exactly the same save for the sulfur content used to prevent substance abuse. I actually used nothing but the medical grade nitrous, but that was simply because the shop I got it from had a hooup which shall of course remain nameless. You should hear the excuses pouring in when people found out it was medical grade stuff. "Hey dude, my car just doesn't run right on that sulfur nitrous.." People would walk in with like Scuba tanks and try to get them filled. Thankfully the guys at the shop were just as blunt and to the point as I was and would promptly escort them out the door. Oh, and another little trick we did...nothing like getting 13-14 pounds of nitrous into a 10 pound bottle. ;)

Regards,

I always thought there was a big difference but I guess I was wrong. I do see why they would put sulfur in the automotive nitrous. Is there a difference in horsepower gains?

The person that taught me the most about nitrous is looking dumber and dumber every day. :( I should've known he wasn't as knowledgeable as he wanted me to think he was after he blew 3 motors LOL.

Read Noslaser's signature and wish it upon your friend :D ..

...There is a small difference, dental grade burns a lot cleaner....

You are correct to an extent. It's not really any kind of 'emissions' difference, but rather the sulfur will leave a colored residue on your spark plugs, and when you 'smell' nitrous when someone is spraying, you are smelling the burnt sulfur, so in a way you are correct. However, the sulfur is merely a byproduct of combustion, and will not affect performance or anything.

Regards,

Yes, the sulfer burns to an orange color on your plugs, be sure to check then before and after every few passes. About every 1,000 miles or so, check and clean the posts on your plugs for proper operation.

LOL!! I got so used to changing plugs since they are so cheap and easy that I used to change mine like once or twice a month, and I used the 'clean' nitrous. ;)

Regards,

I don't even worry about plugs. Mine preaty much start to missfire right after a day at the track. I don't know what I'm doing but I kill them. They look good and clean but they won't work. I don't know what I'm doing to them. I also know of places in my town who get the medical stuff because it's cheaper. Car nitrous has to be shipped here and adds a lot of cost.

ur so wrong frist off n20 is mostly liquid in the tank the dentist has a expansion chamber to change the liquid to a gas. automovitve nitrous is mostly liquid in the tank they use a syphon tube to suck up the luqid.
