What the heck is up with the flywheel differences?

I'm currently looking for a used engine for my 92 GSX and having a hell of a time. I called a local junkyard today that said they had an engine and when I went there they asked if it was AWD or FWD. they said the flywheel is different and all they had in was FWD. They showed me the two flywheels, they were both 6 bolt but the AWD one was small in size and so was the bolt pattern from the FWD. I guess it will fit in with the FWD flywheel but the starter can't catch the flywheel's teeth!! Anyways I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and found a reasonable solution...

You need to have an AWD flywheel if your car is AWD. Your AWD tranny won't work with a FWD flywheel. Why don't you just use your existing AWD flywheel with the new engine?

Yea I thats what I would do but these guys at the junkyard showed me both flywheels. Both were 6 bolt flywheels but the AWD one had a smaller pattern than the FWD. That what they and I tried to eye it up, it looked different...is that possible that there is two different 6 bolt cranks?

NO...It is NOT possible. All 6 or 7 bolt 4g63 turbo motors have the same bolt pattern respectively. Being AWD or FWD is irrelevant. The flywheel they are using is probably not even for the right motor. If that motor you are buying IS a 4g63 turbo motor, it WILL work with your '92 GSX...Just make sure whether you need a 6 or 7 bolt...

but the flywheels are different at least i know for the 2g's, between fwd and awd.

Thanks 90GSX!!! Thats what I thought but those idots at the junkyark said there two 6 bolt patterns...of course he had no teeth either!

I guess I'll go pick one up tomorrow...

Flywheel size does matter. I was sent a FWD flywheel for my AWD and found out after it was installed. The starter hits the side of the ring gear and grinds the flywheel to make it start. Check it four times before you put it in. This little problem is going to cost me big. Always check it before you install it.
