Bluish/White Smoke out of exhaust during boost and shifting...help me diagnos
Hello guys,
...I have a bone stock 95 Eclipse GSt with a rebuilt motor that only has about 15k miles on it. The turbo is still the same and has over 120K miles on it already.
HEre is my problem,When I start up the car, shes fine no smoke.. let her warm up for a few minutes and drive around I can see a small puff of smoke during shifting. THis is not boosting above 3psi.
after a good 5-7 minutes, under full boost of 13psi.. while shifting 1st, 2nd and 3rd.. inbetween those shifts I get a HUGE cloud of smoke. I know its oil because the color is a bluish white tint. on top of that, my oil levels drop after a few weeks.
Im trying to figure out what is causing that. But im suspecting my turbo because it has so many miles. is there a way I can check this?
and what else should I consider looking over???
THanks!

my t25 did that exact same thing, it was my turbo, i'll slowly get worse, ya check for shaft play, i had about 11 millimeters of movement , and if you want a turbo, check hahn motorsports, there selling super 20g's for 600.

Just wondering if it is my valve seals, wouldnt my car smoke first thing when I start her up??? If thats true, since oil will leak down passed the seals...then I assume its not my seals.
My car is clean when she starts up. Its only after a few minutes of driving, I get mad smoke under boost only and only underboost. But the smoke doesnt emit while im boosting, only when I shift.
I guess the only way to find out is to check that turbo out...then if everything checks out fine.. im going to look into the motor.
It definately does sound like the turbo is going to go. I also had this problem. You will definately know when it's completely dead.
As far as Laguna739's turbo suggestion. That is a little big for someone stock. There is quite a nice long list of supporting mods for a turbo that size.
Just double check for shaft play. There should be a tiny bit but not much. Good Luck.
same happened with me, no smoke on start up... compression of 150 across the board on the motor, so assumed it was the turbo blowing the smoke........ bought a big 16g today
If I'm not mistaken. It can have a little shaft play on way but not the other. Unfortunately I can remember which way is alright and whhich is not. I'll see if I can find that tread.
Originally posted by Laguna739 there should be no movement, you blew your turbo more than likely, when i got my 16g i couldnt budge it at all.
After researching I will totally agree with Laguna739.
The bad thing is you are going to have to spend a little money.
The good thing is that now you can upgrade your turbo.
