I am looking at converting a non turbo 1g manual to a turbo 1g AT it looks like a bolt in deal but are there any show stoppers I dont see?

By NO means would that be a bolt in. You'd have to swap EVERYTHING from the turbo car including motor mounts, wiring harness and ALL hardware. But it can be done.

Yes, it is a major swap... I have done several on other makes but had never seen if it was doable with a DSM. If the car we are looking at comes in at the right bucks might just give it a try. thanks ....

Only one mount, and that is the tope tranny mount

I converted my car to manual. It was an auto. I can tell ya it isn't going to be an easy job converting it from manual to auto. There are alot more parts to deal with when changing it to auto. You need to auto tranny computer(a seperate computer which sits behind the ecu), all of the wiring that goes from the tranny computer to the tranny, the auto tranny, the auto tranny pedals, shifter assembly, power/economany button, you will have to run the all of the electrical wires that goes from the shifter to different places, the torque converter, flex plate and more stuff than I have listed. It will probably be easier and cheaper to leave it manual or buy a auto car.

It is doable, but would probably cost more time and money than buying a new car.

speaking of automatics.... can a limited slip differential be put on an automatic? I noticed that a few automatics are running the 1/4 mile in the 11s and even 10s so I'm guessing that they are using a LSD. anyone know???

I just have to ask. Why would you want to convert a manual to an automatic? Manuals are better for performance and gas mileage(under normal driving condition of course). Not too mention they are cheaper to repair.

they are not nessarly better for performance. Say you took 2 awd dsms. 1 manual, 1 auto. And put the same amount of mods on each. I will bet with a good driver in both, the auto would win. Automatics keep the boost better through shifts, and you can generate boost off of the line.

MrP, yeah, but he wants to do the conversion on a non-turbo. I would say just leave it a stick man, so much more fun.

Autos keep the boost better but you cannot shift them where you want too. Unless its a built race auto tranny with selectable shift points :)

besides a lil bit of insanity, ide say an entire parts car.

Y would you do such a thing?

a tranny swap? thats never been done before. Not like you would ever find something like that in these forums.. espeically the one dedicated to transmissions.

it was just a thought ive been thinking of because i can get an auto awd tranny for cheap i jus wanted to kno what else i would need..ive tried doing searches just for that and nothing seems to answer my question , all the auto threads are about building the trannys...i wanted to just kno what was needed because my 5 spd is taking a big $hit on me...i kno this guy running 12.00s on his auto tranny near me and it just inspired me..now i want to try..and no i am not goin to sell my car to buy a car wit an auto in it...plz just answer my question without the bs

check the vfaq, there is tons of information out there. even in the old archived articles on this forum, i found some good information for my auto - 5spd swap.

and why on god's green earth would you want an automatic?

Auto's are fun :D

You wouldn't even have to swap the pedal assemblies, you'd just have an extra pedal, or you could cut it off.

Other than that, tranny, t-case, rear diff, TCU(wiring harness??), shifter cables/shifter itself, I believe front half-shafts, and the extra mount for the tranny. I don't know if you'd have to switch the motor mounts or not, when I put my motor from a 5 speed into an automatic, I used the automatic motor mounts just to be on the safe side.

Basically, I'd try and find an automatic parts car with a shot or missing motor, and just replace the entire drivetrain.

If you need a/t specific mounts, or any of the other small stuff I'm parting out my 95 AT awd and I have most of that crap just laying in a box in my room. ;) always good to help a brother out in the dsm world. oh ya, and vist www.atdsm.org we have our own website. :)

Hey auto guys out there!

First off the car is a 91 awd manual, I got sick of problems with the 5 speed tranny, so I am going to switch to an auto . About the car:

Built 2.0l eagle, ross
272's magnus,
Custom long top mount header w/ T4 gt40 67 trim
880's vps,afc.

made 485hp on low 20psi we will be shooting for 600 on 30+

Is the auto/ manual rear 4 bolt different?
Difference's between fwd/awd Stall Converter?
Axles different? front rear
parts I need, tcu, wire harness, shifter, cables, cooler, tranny, stall anything else?

If I were to buy parts from ITP and have an auto rebuilt in town which parts would be the first to go out? looking to run mid 10's how long would a stocker with some upgrades last?

I don't remember everything. But here's what I do remember. The transfer case is different, the rear end has a different gear ratio as well. I'll just make a list of what I remember.

Transfer case
Rear end
cooler, and lines
shifter, and cables.
TCU, and not sure about the wire harness going to the tranny, but I bet you'll need one.
pedals. I think the break switch is different on the A/T as well
I can't remember if the front axles are the same as a manual or not.
Rear axles should be the same.
The FWD torque converter should be the same externally, and I'm pretty sure it has the same stall as a AWD.

I would defenetly get a high stall TC for that turbo. From what I remember they don't make the billet units for 1Gs anymore. You might even need some nitrous to spool it up. IPT sells the best restalled units IMO.

There is a good little write up on this by a guy from Carolina DSM (Motohead1) who is/has converting his MT to AT. He could probably answer any of your questions. I'll post a link in just a minute.

take a look in the drive train forum there are plenty of articles documenting this swap, and if worse comes to worse, beef up that auto tranny and put in a manual controller.
