Lets get started. Im new here, so thanks for any help. Ok so i bought a 98 gst pretty good shape has intake and exhaust. Ok so heres the weird parts. Car starts up just fine. And when u put it in gear it just sits. And u can feel it go in gear. So any help on this part would be great. Now the weird part. If i have my keys in my pocket and i put it in reverse the lights come on as if i turned the key and was about to start it. If anyone could point me in the right direction on this you would be a life saver. Thanks

Check your CV shafts. You have an open differential, so if a shaft is broken then it will send all the power to that side.

The reverse lights are triggered by a sensor on the transmission.

Only things that it could be IMO are 1. CV shafts broke 2. clutch disks burned up 3. Broken transmission. I would jack up the front end, and check the CV shafts, if the feel fine then its probally your clutch

The reverse lights are triggered by a sensor on the transmission and it's always hot for safety reasons. So they will turn on any time the trans is put into reverse, key on or not.

sounds like a burnt clutch or broken cv like stated.

on the light, im not too sure about it having constant power. none of my standard trans vehicles will turn the reverse lights on without the key at least being on, let alone in the ignition. ive parked my vehicles in reverse and ive never seen them on, or come back to a dead battery over night.

he stated his keys arent in the ign, but in his pocket. and he stated that when he puts it in reverse, the lights come on like he was going to start it (im assuming he actually means dash lights).

it sounds like someone has done some funky wiring, might need to take a look around the engine bay and under the dash to see whats been tampered with.

Like they said the CV shaft could be popped out just a little and that can cause weird problems.

I had this happen once when autozone gave me the wrong clutch disk and the input shaft just spun in gear. the reason I didnt notice it was I aligned the disk with a universal tool instead of a splined tool

It must be an auto to manual swap and the previous owner wired the reverse light off the battery instead of a switched 12vdc source like he should have. Thats not right, it should not do that. Find the reverse switch and wire it in correctly.

It is my cousins car he put a new clutch but hes not that bright LOL and as for the lights its not just the reverse lights its the dash lights to. Im gonna check all the sensors and maybe just buy a new clutch. And it is a standard. Thanks for all the help
