Starter???

Ok. I have a 98 gst and I just completed a full 6bolt 2.4 with 1g head swap. The motor came out of a running car so I know it is good. I hooked up everything and when I try to start the car, i hear my fuel pump whine and my starter just spin. It's like the starter isn't contacting the flywheel. I had the starter grounded to the transmission so I put the ground on the other prong on the starter itself ( the post closer to the block). When I tried to start it again it just clicked once like te starter was bad or no battery power. The battery reads 12.3v. Could anyone help? And my flywheel has all of its teeth and I used the plate from my prior motor for the tranny and starter.

The only thin I can think of is the starter from my 98 eclipse doesn't work with this motor. But the tranny is still the same? Only difference is the 6bolt flywheel.

I'm not 100% sure.

The starter is interchangeable from 90-99. I am betting that you have an awd flywheel.

Remove the starter and try it outside, Just put ground to the body of the starter and positive to the big bolt behind the starer, then make a jump to the solenoid and see what happens, I bet you the solenoid is bad and is not popping out the starter gear.

Hope you install a FWD and not an AWD Flywheel.
Give a try to the starter and let as know.

I think I might have an AWD flywheel. But what is the difference that it won't work? And thank you for the web page but I had already read that and I couldn't find it.

The awd flywheel is a smaller diameter which won't allow the starter to make contact with it.

My starter free spins like that all the time after a few trys it finally catches. I just figured it was the bendix gear not engaging.
