Timing Belt Issues

Hey everyone,

I am hoping that my issue isnt too serous but I have a feeling like it is.

The other night I got back to my car (92 2000GTX Turbo) and went to turn it over and it started to make a horrible noise from somewhere under the hood and wasn't idling properly. I quickly turned it off and took a quick peek under the hood. I didn't see too much that could be causing it so I turned the car over again and looked under the hood. Yet again making a horrible clacking/ grinding noise(hard to explain). I still couldn't find anything wrong. I turned the car off and opened up the upper timing belt cover and it was grinding on the plastic cover.... What would cause the timing belt to shift over like that? From what I could see and feel the belt still had good tension on it and looked in perfect shape.

I got the car towed back home and have started to pull apart the car to get at the larger timing belt cover. Any possible things to look at? From what I can tell the Cam timing is still spot on. How much damage do you thing was caused?

I will be checking out the rest of the timing tomorrow so any advise would be awesome.

Check your Oil pump sprocket at the back of the engine. It might be backing out. Otherwise, maybe a pulley is starting to seize.

^Agreed^ Check the oil sprocket. My car went down for that exact problem back in May. Had a horrible screeching kind of sound that I still don't know how to fully describe. The nut somehow backed off and the sprocket worn a hole through the timing cover and started grinding on the crank pulley. I got lucky though, timing didn't get ruined and the valves were saved.

I am pretty sure my timing is way off now. I believe the cam timing is right on but no compression at least on the first 2 cylinders.

Try the leak down test to find out what is causing the lack of compression.

So time to start a donation fund. Who wants to pitch in? but seriously any help / guidance to a rebuild on a budget would be awesome.

Looks like my failure point was the dowel pin on the cam holding the cam gear. It had since been grounded down and the the cam gear continued to turn while the cam didn't.... I'm assuming new pistons, valve job and valves. Anything else?

ha, that sucks man. i was driving down the highway a few months ago when my car just died... popped off my valve cover to find the exact same thing. i would almost venture out to say it would be cheaper to try and find a used complete head on here...

I agree see if you can find a used one. I would pull the head to inspect the pistons.

Holy @#*%..... looks like you're gonna need some new valves too based on those piston pics. I feel your pain, the wallet pain that is.

From what I can see the Pistons arnt that bad just some minor scratching. there is only one piston that actually has any kind of bur and its very minor. I have gotten ahold of a used complete head for $250. Is that a good deal. Its on a car atm that is running so it should be good to go.

Well that's good to hear. I'd say that's a decent deal for a good used known running head. I'd go for it.

Yes that sounds like a good deal on a COMPLETE head. I have 1g fat rods/pistons if you need some. Those look a little beat, clean them up & repost.

I wouldn't reuse them, but that's my preference. They may still be good, but I'm notable expert so I can't tell you one way or another. My call is to not chance it, to be safe.
