Oil leak from oil filter housing

Last night, right before i pulled into my driveway, my oil filter came loose. All of my oil came out. Like, seriously, all of it.

So today, i take the filter off, check the stud that the filter threads onto, and sure enough it is loose. I tightened it with a wrench because i didnt have a socket big enough that was a deep well. I may not have gotten it tight enough, but the new filter is tight.

So i thought it was all good. Drove about 70 miles today. Lost about all of my oil. Oil is dripping from the back side of the filter. Like on the side facing the left front wheel.

Would it be the seal, gasket, or the stud for the filter?

I use to have the same problem of the internal stud/bolt that the oil filter attaches to backing out after installing prothane motor mounts on my 1g. You gotta tighten that bolt down really tight to get it from backing out. Coudl have ruined a seal or gasket as well trying to retighten it. But I say your stud/bolt probably backed out again. Check and see how loose it is again.

Over-tightening it will crush the internal cooler fins, causing your coolant and oil to mix.

Tighten it to the proper torque and use some thread locker.

I ordered a seal from the parts store. Will be here tomorrow. Im actually still at the parts store using their wifi.

I wanna take the filter off tonight but dont wanna waste any more oil. Might just wait till morning. I hope it's just not tight enough. What size is that stud? I used a 15/16" wrench. I guess thatd be like a 22mm.

Correct, not trying to misinform. Tighten to specs. I didnt have a torque wrench or socket that deep to properly torque down bolt at the time that happened. But I had to tighten it several times over and over and I found that it finally stayed in place after getting that bolt down really tight. If I had to do it over again I would have pulled the bolt/stud out completely and threw a bit of locktite in the tip and I probably wouldnt have had to tighten it so tight. Dont locktite the whole stud if you go that route or youll have a seized oil filter on the housing, haha.

29-33ft lbs

CLEAN DRY THREADS or torque it to less than spec so as not to crush the fins

I don't see a leak per-say, just your alternator covered in oil.

Do you see it now? Lmao. Orange seal is what came off. Got the wrong seal. Old one is obviously ripped.

So I took the ofh off.

Clearly, it is torn and this is where the leak was coming from. The seal is a dealer item so it could not be bought from a parts store. I ended up re-using the seal and siliconed the shit out of it. The leak was fixed.

Pain in the ass, but she doesn't lose any oil anymore.
