shaft play...upgrade or stay stock

Last night when driving in second gear i noticed the boost was not building smoothly as usual so i left my foot out of it to discover i had blew out a big cloud of blueish grey smoke. Which i believe is oil
the car is pretty much stock with an Ohio rusting body Iv'e never thought it was worth putting money into a rust bucket. But after pulling off the inlet pipe to the turbo and i can feel a half inch to an inch of shaft play I'm assuming my turbo is blown. Car still runs and does not smoke when idling but probably does when driving. i had my buddy rev it up for me while i stood behind it and it did not put out smoke until he let off like the throttle. i drove it to work and babied it today checking the oil before and after and it did not lose any but I'm not gonna keep driving around after i felt the shaft play.

the reason for this post is i had looked on craigslist and no one has a stock turbo for sale or even an evo III. I'm from Toledo Ohio and there is not dsm shop in town anymore but I'm keeping my eyes open for a bigger turbo. or possibly a cheap ebay turbo and not trying to push much boost from it.

i was looking for advice if the 1g turbo was bigger or something or possibly if anyone knew a good re manufactured turbo or should i be bending over at the junkyards, or a rebuild kit?

I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible but some more horsepower would be fun.

That turbo won't be rebudable if the shaft play is that bad. Your best bet is to get a 14b (stock 1g turbo) with the oil supply line. You won't need the expensive install kit that everyone recommends. You can use your 2g drain line, coolant lines and 1g oil supply line. You will need a plug to block off the oil filter housing. You will then feed the 14b from the head. You will need to buy new gaskets for the turbo which can be bought for 23 bucks from rockauto.com, felpro part number ES72787. You can use the 1g stock j pipe or get the aftermarket side mount j pipe from ebay. You will have to do a little modification to make the lower intercooler pipe connect either way.

You have a lot of options but not a lot of good ones. The 14b is the stock 1g turbo which is probably what he meant. The 14b is probably your best bet if you want a little more power but don't want to spend a bunch of money on other mods. Even you did a 16g there would be a lot more you would need to do. So get a 14b, do a little extra work to get it installed, and gain some more power. Or get a t-25, easy install but no fun. Two logical choices as I see it with you using the word cheap.

Do not buy a ebay turbo no matter how little boost you run!

I do have a stock t-25 in my garage I would be willing to sell you.

the t-25 sucks i wouldnt go back to it and pretty much the same mods to put in the 14b you would do with the small 16g if you arent looking for more power or to spend alot just stick with the t-25 i know someone that might even buy the blown t-25 off you for parts hes a turbo rebuilder on here his name is jusmx141 great guy and i bought my small 16g off him never had a problem

as said before DONT get an ebay turbo i did i paid 750 for mine cause i didnt want a cheapo one off ebay for like 300 thatll blow fast it was the stock t-25 it lasted 3 weeks and blew doing 60 down the highway

if you decide to go with the 14b or 16g i can send you links to everything i used for my install and i feed from the OFH with no problems and no restrictor the choice is really up to you if you tell us your budget we can help make better suggestions to you also

dont get the ebay j-pipe thought bryanwheat suggested i found out the hard way it leaks its angled wrong and the weld is to close to the bolt hold and hits the motor mount the best thing i found which i admit is a little pricy but will work the best in my opinion for the 14b 16g setup to the sidemount is this
DEJON | Powerhouse go to 2nd gen sidemount ic pipes then click j-pipes and u pipes best setup ive found so far

Ya 14b and 16g take is about the same to install but he won't be able to go past 15psi without more mods and that isn't using either turbo to it's fullest. I see 14b's go for less then 16g's. Agree that t-25 sucks, maybe nice for a gocart.

okay so everyone is saying to stay away from ebay turbos because i found a guy in my town with this 94 Eagle Talon AWD AUTO Partout says he has an evo 3 gt turbo and some exhaust pipes for it, the ad says obo on the parts i want.

and then there's this
Misubishi 14B turbo DSM/Talon/Eclipse/Laser a 14b that looks good in the pictures and i think is going to be the route i am going to go. Its about a two hour drive down there and a two hour drive back lol is it worth fifty bucks in gas from driving my brothers old Mercedes.

OH! and for my budget lol well i have 1500 but i am debating on buying a beater grand prix so i can drive it to work and slowly rebuild the talon. Maybe spring for a used fmic and piping and bigger bov(and i will need help picking a bov) and of course i know i will need to get a 255walbro. Or, i could get the 14b turbo for 100$ and try to keep the fix as low as possible. Now with the 14b turbo will my stock side mount intercooler still work?
