Door handle lock sensor

So i'm replacing the door handles on my car as they are both broken. There is a sensor or something that the clip broke on and it can't snap onto the actual locking unit.

Attached is a picture, and I'm wondering what it actually does, do I need it, and what is it called? Any info you can give me about it would be greatly helpful.

What he said and I think it also has to do with security system.

By the way if you havent checked this out yet I recommend it I got done replacing my driver handle and shortly after it just broke again. I got really good at changing out the handles under 1hour. But now I dont have to again...

This switch serves 2 purposes. It can disarm your security system. It is the trigger for your power locks to lock both doors. It is listed as:
MB923689 SWITCH-DOOR LOCK- - Coupe
