2G-specific

UPDATED PICS: Quick Release Steering Wheel

I searched, none of the topics I found answered any of my questions.

I am interested in installing a quick release steering wheel/hub in my 2G (for theft reasons).

I have at least 8 or 9 dirt modifieds with one in them. I am trying to figure out how to put these into a 2G. Before I go tearing my steering wheel off, I would like to know what is involved.

Will any quick release hub work on any vehicle? As in the ones I have in the dirt cars? Sorry for the newb question. I have no idea how to go about doing this on a DSM.

i used a sparco one in a european car and it really was un bolt it and just bolt the new one in, some have center bolts and some multi bolts around the outside, im pretty sure they are a universal fitment so any good brand will work not to sure on the cheaper products and build quality

Thanks for the reply.

I am looking for pictures with the stock wheel off. As well as diameter/specs of the stock shaft.

Try contacting STM

I know damn near every car they build they install an aftermarket steering wheel.

Here's is the Sparco hub they use.

You'll need 3 things
1. A hub (the one listed above is perfect)
2.a Quick release I'd go with nrg (you can choose from different models/visions/colors)
3. Aftermarket steering wheel (stick with authentic stuff, fake shit bends under load)
You said you want it for theft reasons, if that's the case I recommend a hub lock kit.

Links:
Hub link is above
Quick release: Quick Release | NRG Innovations
Steering wheels: Limited Edtion Deep Dish | NRG Innovations
Lock: Quick Lock | NRG Innovations

Price:
Usually hub/lock run around $120 a piece
And a wheel around $150+
If you can find a combo it's usually in the ballpark of $300, that's how much I paid for a complete setup (hub/release/wheel/lock) but it was for an integra dc2 but I'd imagine price would be the same.
Good luck.

Those dirt modifieds have a coupler welded to the column. I did the same thing on my old 1G. Cheap, effective, and it didn't space the wheel way out like many of the bolt-on kits do.

So you weld that hub on it has a quick disconnect? Which wheels are compatible with the hub?

The splined stub welds on, and the disconnect locks to the splined stub. The hub allows for any 3-bolt steering wheel, which is just about anything aftermarket. I had a lightweight aluminum Grant steering wheel in my 1G.

the quick release is almost universal the the hub that goes on the steering wheel column wont be you need the one that will work on your car...nrg sells the slim hub so the steering wheel wont go that far out

So if I buy this and weld it on, I can throw a wheel on from the dirt mod and I am good to go?

Wonder if I can possibly remove the hub from one of my dirt mods too?

Yup. Or any other aftermarket wheel. Most dirt modified wheels will probably have way too much dish for a DSM. You'll want something in the 13-14" diameter range and with a little dish as possible (like 1" or less).

Guy I work with has a quick release steering wheel that came off of his Neon. Comes with the hub and everything.

Will it work on my Talon? Like are the splines the same?

Theft reasons is pointless for a removable steering wheel, and even less so with a hub lock.

Buddy of mine had one in his civic, someone came by with a $20 steering wheel, some self tapping screws and some balls and stole it. We know those specifics because they found what was left of the car on blocks on some mountain road.

If it's for aesthetics then so be it, but there are more effective theft deterrents then that. Such as alarms, kill switches, and disabling the vehicle.

I remove my ECU, a couple relays, fuses, and unplug my coil and a couple random sensors pretty much every night. I also have a two way paging alarm waiting to go in on one of my next weekends off.

Well the hub "might" not work, most "hub adapters" are vehicle specific, After market steering wheels will work, although they usually come in 5 & 6 bolt configurations, the most popular is the 6 bolt config, ngr makes 6 bolt steering wheels only (I believe). Although the quick release is universal with both sides having the same bolt pattern, coming apart in the center allowing you to remove your steering wheel quickly aka "quick release" you still need a hub adapter to convert your oem steering wheel to accept a 6 bolt patter steering wheel.

Post a picture of the steering wheel your friend is offering

What you need is

1. A 95-99 2g "hub adapter"
preferably with a 6 bolt pattern

2. An aftermarket steering wheel with the same bolt pattern as you hub adapter

3. (optional) a "quick release" and "quick release lock"
With the same bolt patterns as your hub adapter and steering wheel.

The hardest part is taking off the OEM steering wheel, everything else is a simple bolt and play set up that is self explanatory.

make sure you have a steering wheel pulley since you cant simply just yank it off. Also once you disconnect your airbag to remove the steering wheel your SRS light will stay on until you get it bypassed. If you really want to prevent your car from being stolen i just unclip the fuel rail so that you cant start it. If you want it for looks however go ahead and do it man! JUst some things to take into consideration when doing this job

Here are some pics of the wheel and the hub.

Brand of wheel is "Nardi".

There are 6 bolts like some of you have mentioned.

Hope this helps you determine whether or not it will work.

Front of wheel

Back of wheel

Found this pic online. I THINK it's the same wheel. EDIT- No it is not.

Box that the Hub is in.

Pics of hub and quick release.

The steering wheel will work, but I don't know about that hub, if I was you I would just invest in a NRG quick release instead of using the hub in your picture...

The hub in that picture wont work ive bought 2 of the $10 ones on ebay (the one pictured) and both times the splines were too small. The steering wheel is also not a narni its a cheap $15 wheel off ebay, i have the same one, i picked up at a junkyard for 4 bucks, and comparing that to my friends NRG it feels like a plastic toy. Id buy everything NRG if you want quality for a decent price

Certain ones bend really easily. Under road racing conditions itcould cause an accident.

Ahh, I gotcha. The reason I asked was because I sell alot of steering wheels for under $60 (which I would consider to be cheap). But I wouldn't call them junk either. They're just simple steering wheels for use on race cars. Once you take away the leather wrapping, fancy stitching, anodizing, and high-end brand name, you can get a nice, strong steering wheel without spending alot of money.

I guess I'm not surprised that some companies are selling flimsy steering wheels though, but I've been lucky enough to never come across one.
